It was time for the big race, Nichi once again would be running against some of the best younger horses in racing right now and there was a lot of talk that the stallion was not fit to run after his breakdown in Australia. His workouts had definitely been slower, but Waylon had been purposely holding him back, preventing him from breezing with any workout companions and being sure to run him only when no one else was near the track. He wanted to save the competitive spirit he knew was in his stallion until race day.
When talk about Nichi hit his ears Waylon frowned, there were some people who thought it cruel of him to run a horse that had broken down twice in his lifetime. But he knew the truth of the matter was that it would be crueler to not run him. Other than the fact that he was older and they would have to run him lightly with his ligament injury there was no reason for him to put up in a paddock and kept fat like many of the retired racing stallions he knew. Nichi's spirit was not one to be locked away, and so as the stallion was put in line in the paddock he just held his breath.
The big black stallion seemed oddly calm, until he was led out with Jagger right behind him, catching sight of the other stallion and his stablemate at that he reared up and lashed out, giving a great roar before coming back down and prancing away head and tail high in the air.
The antics made Waylon laugh and he slapped the rail with a smile, "Old habits die hard, and you're not ready to give up just yet big guy." Indeed, Nichi wasn't ready to throw in the towel just yet. He still had work to do, and he still had fire in his belly and a will to win.
