The Mix of Iron and Blood: Chapter Thirteen

Unseen Previous Chapter The rain had stopped sometime before dawn, but it seemed like no one had let the jungle know. Water still came down through the canopy in its own time, in fat irregular drops that struck the broad leaves below like knuckles on a door. Everything dripped. Everything steamed as the heat came up. Elkog had given up on the idea of being dry two days ago, somewhere between the river and that abandoned village, and now simply walked wet, his trousers stuck to his skin and his boots making a squelching sound at every step that he had started to hate. Michelle set the pace, because she was still regaining her strength after being healed. She did not complain about it, she simply walked with her head down and her hand out for branches, and every so often she stopped without warning and stood with her eyes closed, breathing, while the rest of them waited and gave her the time she needed. Then she would say "right" and start again. They had been doing that since first

Blackness. There was blackness. And pain. Very much pain. She was on something, like a cot. She could feel the cloth against her back. The cot rocked back and forth, every movement causing more pain. She moaned, from the pain. Wetness was on her face and neck, and her side. She could feel it within her lungs. She was bleeding internally. Memories came back to her. She had fought the Gozari Admiral. With his own pistol she had shot him, killed the bastard. It was a good kill. She would tell her ancestors of it, when she met them. She chuckled at the thought. That was a mistake. Chuckling brought much pain. You have broken ribs. At least one has fractured, and is poking into a lung. A series of coughs wracked her. Hands pushed at her, holding her down. There were voices, but she could not understand them. The voices sounded odd, with strange inflectiions. They were not Firstborn. They were human. Old Gods, I am dying. I understand you require my life, for my sins. I

'Heroes O' The North'

It was a busy time in Aberdeen, Scotland. On January 8, 1951, one of the old LNER’s wartime “A2/2” Pacifics was in the shed at Aberdeen Ferryhill awaiting its next turn of duty. This was Ferryhill shed’s 60501 Cock O’ The North, the first Gresley-designed “P2” “Mikado” of 1936, only rebuilt into a Thompson “A2/2” in 1943. As Cock o’ the North’s driver climbed into his cab, a shrill GNR whistle roared through the foggy abyss. “Who’s there?” called Cock o’ the North. Cock o’ the North was in for a surprise! Backing down next to him was a massive dark green non-corridor tender and its engine’s shape was very like his own. Cock o’...

The engines were happy. Scott the A3 Pacific had come back to Sodor for another round of fan trips. One day, two weeks after he’d arrived, Scott was idling on the outside turntable at Tidmouth Station. He glanced over as Alfred, the Fat Controller’s B12/3, backed down onto the coaling track. “Hello Scotsman,” he said grandly, “have a good run from York?” “Indeed I did,” replied the A3 Pacific, and he recounted every word. “I wouldn’t mind having a ten year overhaul,” he said, “I’ve been worked off my wheels these last few days!” “Now don’t you talk like that,” said Scott firmly, “it took so long because of human error and the fact that I was in such a poor state.” “Yes,” said Alfred, “Gordon told me he vouched for you every single day.” “Good for him,” said Scott happily. As Alfred’s crew continued coaling him, the Fat Controller came up to see him. “I’m glad I caught you Flying Scotsman,” he called, “Peter’s broken down and has had to go to the Works. He’ll be

"Why would anyone want to work with such disgusting creatures." She thought as she sailed into Fiji. She was like several clippers who survived the purge. Forced to abandon her trade and scowering the docks like a lowly tramp to find work. Her one advantage down here was speed and that enabled her to pick up whatever cargo was available. On this trip it was tallow. Cutty Sark hated tallow, it was greasy and smelly. A far cry from the sweet smelling tea she once carried. Oh how she missed her beautiful tea. She limped her way along the coast, her smooth sail hampered by her exhaustion. Reaching the distant British outpost of Hong Kong, Cutty Sark happily offloaded that cargo and brought on something completely different. This was a load of sweet smelling orange petaled flowers. Curiously, she sniffed one and was amazed at how relaxed just
