The Mix of Iron and Blood: Chapter Thirteen

Unseen Previous Chapter The rain had stopped sometime before dawn, but it seemed like no one had let the jungle know. Water still came down through the canopy in its own time, in fat irregular drops that struck the broad leaves below like knuckles on a door. Everything dripped. Everything steamed as the heat came up. Elkog had given up on the idea of being dry two days ago, somewhere between the river and that abandoned village, and now simply walked wet, his trousers stuck to his skin and his boots making a squelching sound at every step that he had started to hate. Michelle set the pace, because she was still regaining her strength after being healed. She did not complain about it, she simply walked with her head down and her hand out for branches, and every so often she stopped without warning and stood with her eyes closed, breathing, while the rest of them waited and gave her the time she needed. Then she would say "right" and start again. They had been doing that since first

That wasn’t to suggest anything was going wrong or that you were uncomfortable, but that things were becoming slow...and boring. Or maybe Gilbert was rubbing off on you, and you thought so by now. Overall, life was good: the people were slowly and steadily earning your trust, although the silver stallion remained at the top of that list, and he gave you subtle hints that he was pleased by your progress. In the last two weeks, you’d allowed a full wash down, cleaned hooves and the simplest of shoes, a well-brushed mane and tail, a woolen stable blanket and, most impressive of all, an embroidered leather (f/c) halter with your personal lead rope. The people didn’t often use the rope, however, because you still went wherever you chose. As for Gilbert, the two of you continued to grow

The curl on his head was long enough to tickle the other side of your neck and when he lifted his head to meet your gaze, you saw his blue eyes held nothing but respect and adoration. “You don’t have to explain anything,” he said, his voice much softer. “You’re my best friend. Besides, we make a good team, don’t we? Yeah...” He nodded, suddenly confident. “If I’m the Hero, then you’re my sidekick! Because it was just you and him here, he always gave you attention and asked how you were doing or if you needed anything. His concern was touching and made you feel protected, mainly because you had always protected yourself in the wild. You also saw the benefit of sleeping in a stall every night; you didn’t fear the hooting of owls, but you often flinched when the bushes rustled during the night, even among your herd. In the safety of the little barn, there was no need to startle and you enjoyed the company of the moon and stars. And Matthew. Even he must know by now that you were grateful for his help. The one reason you weren’t anxious all the time was because he was teaching you new words, what they meant and how

Aquitania made her early morning rounds of the Cunard docks in Southampton. With Mauretania away on a trip to New York, the job was left to her. The old Saxonia was at her berth resting after a long voyage from Halifax. The fleet deputy winced at the sound of her harsh breaths. Her lung condition had gotten worse and she feared the old liner wouldn't last the month. Caronia was curled up next to her. With her sister out on cruise from Liverpool she found a snuggling buddy in the elder. Aquitania smiled at the cute sight before continuing on.Her running mate and the third member of the grand trio, Berengaria, was also in her berth which wasn't uncommon. When she wasn't on a transatlantic voyage, she would enter her berth and stay there! "Good morning." Aquitania greeted. She chuckled, already well prepared for this eventuality. After all, what was an apprentice ship without her mentor. Missouri appeared on the horizon. Arleigh glanced at Belknap, quivering in her eagerness. The 6th Fleet flagship laughed. "Go on." She said and the destroyer ran off. At least she had the decorum to ask for permission first before she raced off. Nonetheless, her keenness was something the old cruiser noted. "She's going to be trouble that one." She thought. Missouri had only seconds to react to spotting Arleigh before the destroyer was on her. "Whoa!" She laughed as Arleigh leaped into her bow. The destroyer was so excited she gave little love nips as only the fleet's pack animals could. Missouri rolled her eyes but indulged her. She crouched down, a signal she was ready to play.
