Description
Cecily was insanely nervous about this competition with Leche, they hadn't done anything at night before like this, so she'd been taking the boy to the outside arena on the ranch to practice. But now it was the real thing. The night was beautiful and clear, the smell of the apple trees hit her as they waited to go, and she could just see the hint of color changes among the leaves that were illuminated by the moon. It was brighter than she would have thought, and the first thing that came to her mind was how truly perfect this night was for jumping.
Leche was smaller than some of the other horses and that made her anxious, what if he was too small? Could he be competitive? They'd pre-registered for a lot of competitions, and now she was second guessing herself. Taking a deep breath she just patted Leche's neck, "We'll just go have fun how's that big boy?" Leche tossed his head and whinnied softly at her, he could feel her anxiety and it was causing him to have show nerves! Soon enough it was their time to go though and she just focused, willing the two of them to jump in harmony once more and to do as best as they could.
She eased into it, letting Leche get a good idea of the arena before pushing him a bit more. He had to get a little more speed than some of the bigger horses to carry himself over the jumps. But he liked to jump, and he jumped with pretty lines. Even if he didn't always clear the bars, it amazed Cecily how he moved his body so effortlessly for a pony so small. They were coming up on one of the bigger ones, a half moon jump, and Cecily put the hammer down, forcing Leche to pick up speed but holding him back until the absolute last moment for him to jump. She knew the timing had to be perfect or he would never clear this height. Cecily found herself holding her breath as the jump came closer and closer until she finally gave the cue, Leche's ears pricked forward and as he pushed off she leaned against his neck to direct him back down once he got over the bars.
But was it too soon? Had they waited too long? Would this jump be the end of their dreams of doing well in the competition? Cecily found she closed her eyes, and so when the ground came beneath Leche's hooves again and they were off to the next jump she was honestly shocked. It caused her to miss her turn slightly for the next jump, be just a bit off center, but she worked hard to make up for the lost time. Proud of her horse for simply doing something that didn't always seem was within his reach.
