Description
They had all been monitoring Nichi's progress as he worked through his injury, and though the vet said his physical recovery was going well there was still something off about their stallion. Watching the monitors from his stall Waylon noticed that the stallion seemed very down, as he had since the injury occurred after he made a hard fought dead heat for third in the Flinder's Cup. There was no doubt in his mind that his stallion had fire in his soul, but watching him now, as he fought through the mental component of his injury was heart breaking. Shifting Waylon just watched him, thinking at first that maybe he was sleeping before the horse blinked. Nichi wasn't sleeping, he was just down.
Running his fingers through his hair he wondered if they were doing everything they cold for the stallion or...if there was something else that they could do to get him back to his old self. All the things that they had tried so far hadn't even gotten a rise out of him, even when they'd brought him to one of their teaser mares. Nothing, he just stood there with his head down looking completely defeated.
"We've got to get him back." Sighing softly Waylon shifted his attention to some of the books in front of him, he'd been doing a lot of pedigree research lately and as he skimmed the pages he thought back to some of the other old war horses who had suffered breakdowns like this and what they did to get them back. Pushing himself up he moved quickly to find Colton and get some adjustments made.
Nichi was forced to get up and hot walk, working out the injury though his speed was little more than plodding along. While he was being worked arrangements were made to move the stallion to the paddock that attached to the house. It was made more for their yard pony, Mushroom, but thinking over Nichi's career and how he had been treated after his last injury the decision was made to move the stallion to where he could constantly be in the company of his team.
When it was time to take the stallion back to his stall Colton started to lead him towards the big house, but the stallion stopped in his tracks and grabbed the lead rope tugging it towards his familiar isolated stall back at the breeding shed.
"Not this time boy, we're going this way." He started to lead him again and Nichi resisted tossing his head a few times. "Now come on, Kit Kat is already up here waiting for you. We've got you all set up."
Snorting the stallion stamped his hooves a bit before looking towards his old stall and apprehensively going with Colton, the little fit had made the man smile. It was the first glimpse at their stallion's true self that they had seen since Australia. Nichi let himself be led to the paddock at the big house, but when he got there he slammed on the breaks again. Tossing his head and half rearing before carefully coming down on his good leg first, the bad one pawing at the dirt a bit. This was not where he belonged, this was where the yard pony decorated the lawn!
But it was set up for the stallion, with two stalls, one big enough for him thoroughly fluffed up and one smaller one for Kit Kat his Shetland Pony stable pet. Biting at the rope he tried again to tug it out of Colton's hand but the man knew his tricks and soon enough he was inside the paddock and being let off the rope. Nichi stood there and snorted, tossing his head a few times before shaking it out at Colton. This wasn't right! He wasn't a yard decoration he was a race horse!
Colt moved out of the paddock and closed it behind him, "I'll let you get settled big guy." Seeing Colton leave had Nichi charging the fence, tossing his head and neighing at the man demanding to be put back in his stall. When that didn't work he reared into a buck and took off along the fence line to chase Colt until the man disappeared inside the house.
The next few days he was greeted and tended to by each member of his team, they'd come out in the mornings and work with him before anyone else. They saw him every day throughout the day, spending time with him even when most of the horses were stabled and down for the night. It seemed to be working, he was getting feisty and starting to demand their attention as they walked by, and each day his leg got a bit better.
Finally it was time to put him under saddle again and ease him back into work, he was pointed to a race at the end of the month back at White Blood Stables, and they only hoped he would be fit enough to run. For now though, Nichi seemed to be on the mend...physically and mentally. Though only time could tell.
