Description
Triton had been cleared to race just a few days before the Melbourne Cup and while he'd gotten a mild work out in the short hours before the race Waylon was still considering scratching the colt. They were on the walk towards the Birdcage at Flemington Racecourse and the statue of the great Phar Lap came into view. Triton started acting up then biting at the bit and tossing his head, behavior he'd recently started to display right before a race. But now in the presence of The Great Red Terror's statue Triton felt a spark igniting inside him.
Waylon was walking just behind them, with Harley walking the colt out and he could see the body language of Triton change. Perhaps it was the glint of the sun off the bronze statue, or perhaps Big Red's image had spurred the inner "terror" in Triton but the spark he'd liked to see in his colt before a race was there. And though he felt he was slightly under prepared, perhaps he would be more than a little surprised at what his colt had to show them. But what made Waylon even more proud was that he could hear Harley talking to his colt quietly as they passed Phar Lap.
"Phar Lap was a real wonder horse big boy, just like you. He won 37 of 51 races, including this very race back in the 30s. He brought pride to the world when it needed it most, kind of like you and Nichi did for us.
