The Mix of Iron and Blood: Chapter Thirteen

Unseen Previous Chapter The rain had stopped sometime before dawn, but it seemed like no one had let the jungle know. Water still came down through the canopy in its own time, in fat irregular drops that struck the broad leaves below like knuckles on a door. Everything dripped. Everything steamed as the heat came up. Elkog had given up on the idea of being dry two days ago, somewhere between the river and that abandoned village, and now simply walked wet, his trousers stuck to his skin and his boots making a squelching sound at every step that he had started to hate. Michelle set the pace, because she was still regaining her strength after being healed. She did not complain about it, she simply walked with her head down and her hand out for branches, and every so often she stopped without warning and stood with her eyes closed, breathing, while the rest of them waited and gave her the time she needed. Then she would say "right" and start again. They had been doing that since first

From Maggie to Margareta

A Story of Freedom Growing Safer and Safer Do you really think you get to decide for yourself, you little fool? Do you vote for MAGA or the AfD out of conviction? The fact is that you have fears, and Trump and the AfD exploit them. They twist the truth until the lie becomes the one and only truth. This story shows how you follow the wolves to the slaughterhouse like a sheep, through the distortion of truth and the deliberate stoking of fear. Because you are too stupid and too cowardly to admit your mistake, you also cheer them on. Chapter 1 – Maggie Maggie Hartmann was thirty-three years old, five foot four, blonde and blue-eyed. She had been a member of the SPD in a German state parliament for four years. [DEVIATION] She liked her job. Not every committee meeting or party conference, and certainly not the evenings when a scheduled one-hour meeting at the community centre would turn into a three-hour discussion about a motion that nobody would understand afterwards. Blackness. There was blackness. And pain. Very much pain. She was on something, like a cot. She could feel the cloth against her back. The cot rocked back and forth, every movement causing more pain. She moaned, from the pain. Wetness was on her face and neck, and her side. She could feel it within her lungs. She was bleeding internally. Memories came back to her. She had fought the Gozari Admiral. With his own pistol she had shot him, killed the bastard. It was a good kill. She would tell her ancestors of it, when she met them. She chuckled at the thought. That was a mistake. Chuckling brought much pain. You have broken ribs. At least one has fractured, and is poking into a lung. A series of coughs wracked her. Hands pushed at her, holding her down. There were voices, but she could not understand them. The voices sounded odd, with strange inflectiions. They were not Firstborn. They were human. Old Gods, I am dying. I understand you require my life, for my sins. I

The blizzard had seemed to finally blow itself out. Wisps of snow blew through the canyon and danced around the horses’ feet as they made the ascent. Perseus shook out his mane, sending gobs of snow flying in all directions, as he led the way. Looking across the valley, he was glad that they had found the canyon when they did. The landscape was completely changed now and covered in a thick layer of snow and ice. The sun rising in the east cast a beautiful light through the icicles hanging in the tree branches. Percy blinked rapidly, shocked at the sudden unpleasant feeling, that he didn’t even have time to reprimand the foals before they were gone. Percy sighed and shook himself off. The lines between friend and foe had blurred in Topthorn's mind. Once he would have gladly charged German artillery lines. Now he was helping to build them. Hauling the heavy guns was sapping his strength. Despite Joey helping him that one time it was inevitable he would take his turn at pulling. His bay friend was losing form as well although he was better suited to such work after life on a farm. The end was near, Topthorn knew this. He knew he would not survive this war but he put on a brave front, keeping pace as Henglemann led him and Joey across the countryside. Pulling wagons and guns for use against their friends. After one such haul, Topthorn could barely stand. His legs were shaking and his nose brushed the ground as he lacked the strength to keep his head up. Joey nickered his concern. Hengelmann, bless him, had been one of the few sources of joy since joining the German ranks. The young private genuinely cared for them, unlike the others. "Its such a pity they found you."

The Wool Trade

Newcastle, NSW December 1883 The smell was the first thing that hit Cutty Sark as she pulled into the harbor with Thermopylae. At least it wasn't live cargo but it was still a far cry from her precious tea. Thermopylae nudged her. "Hey, the pelts lose their scent after a day." She assured her. Cutty Sark sighed. She didn't want to appear ungrateful. Thermopylae had thrown her a lifeline with the wool trade. She herself had done it for several years and was in search of a partner to work with. She was also the one who looked after Cutty Sark for months, helping her get a handle on her opium addiction. It was always her. New York 1880 Cutty Sark's hacking coughs were what woke Thermopylae from a dead sleep. The exhausted cutter gripped the dock posts with her rigging, forcing herself upright with much effort. Next to her, Cutty Sark's fever ravaged body was shaking uncontrollably. Between them sat a steeping kettle filled with Eucalyptus tea that Thermopylae poured into a cup now.

Aquitania's Miracle

Aquitania made her early morning rounds of the Cunard docks in Southampton. With Mauretania away on a trip to New York, the job was left to her. The old Saxonia was at her berth resting after a long voyage from Halifax. The fleet deputy winced at the sound of her harsh breaths. Her lung condition had gotten worse and she feared the old liner wouldn't last the month. Caronia was curled up next to her. With her sister out on cruise from Liverpool she found a snuggling buddy in the elder. Aquitania smiled at the cute sight before continuing on.Her running mate and the third member of the grand trio, Berengaria, was also in her berth which wasn't uncommon. When she wasn't on a transatlantic voyage, she would enter her berth and stay there! "Good morning." Aquitania greeted. The larger ship was so still and quiet one might think she was asleep but 4 years of service together had taught Aquitania the intricacies of her subtle body language. She knew she was awake. Berengaria, true to her
