It was dusk at Fox Harbor when Waylon had Colton and Harley take out Triton and Jagger, they needed to get a good work in for Harley in prep for the Breeders Cup and the best thing they could do was put him on one of the two horses aimed at the Melbourne Cup in the meantime. Harley went up on Triton, who was as easy going as they came as long as there wasn't a mare around the track, and Colton mounted up on his not so secret favorite Jagger.
They headed out to the turf track and Colton kept a close eye on Harley, of course the younger Givens had been through jockey school but he was still a young man and he was Waylon's son. Today they were going to start without a gate, and simply go off the bell from Waylon. As they stood there waiting Colton looked over at Harley and took him in for a moment, which made him and Jagger both late for the bell.
Harley urged Triton on and the colt took off like a rocket, but Colton leaned forward and urged Jagger after him. The older stallion had really started to respond well in their more recent races together and Colton was pleased when he saw how quickly they were coming along Triton and Harley. He could see the younger man stand up in the stirrups pulling back slightly on Triton and it made him concerned as he rode passed on Jags.
Titling his head to look over his shoulder Colton saw Harley continue to ease Triton up before he hopped off the colt and started to feel up and down his legs. That was enough for Colton to ease back on Jagger until they came into a slow trot, then he turned the stallion and headed back to Harley and Triton.
Triton's head was down and he had his ears pinned back, Harley was holding his left front leg in his hands and rubbing up and down the fetlock carefully. "What's wrong? What happened?"
"I felt him misstep, something was just off after that." Harley was still holding Triton's leg and the colt was starting to look more agitated by the second which was very unusual for him.
"Let go of his leg," Colton said as he hopped off and walked Jagger over to Triton. "Here hold on to Jags for me." Harley took Jagger's reins and Colton gently started to rub Triton's neck. "Easy boy, let's see what's going on huh?"
Looking over Triton again he saw what Harley had felt, "He grabbed his quarter, took a nice chunk out." Standing up again he patted Triton's neck gently as he watched Waylon come over to them, "He's okay, grabbed a quarter. Should get the vet to make sure there's nothing else though."
They'd start to walk both horses back to the barn, Jagger would immediately go to walking the shed row to cool down while Triton went straight to the vet. All checked out well, he'd be just fine for Melbourne Cup as long as he rested until it healed.
