Story:
Roller hadn't been out much but she'd done well so far for FHF, she was on light rest after a game second in the Blacktyde Classic at the beginning of the year but now it was time to get her rolling again. And Waylon thought the best place for her to go would be to the WBS summer races. It was a mystery with the team, this little filly, she trained hard, worked hard, and ran...okay. For some reason she pulled herself up in the stretch.
To counteract that they put her with a much more aggressive filly, Apollo. The two trained together, were now housed side by side, and often would trade nips at each other through the stall door. Not that they could touch one another, the team had put up a special barrier to keep them from actually making contact. But being next the fiery filly seemed to be bringing the competitive spirit out of Roller.
In training she tested Apollo, coming in close so the filly would focus on trying to take her out rather than trying to win their little speed duels. It was definitely a test of sorts. If things got too close they would be pulled apart from training for a while, and then when they calmed down again would once more be put together. So far so good, both fillies were showing their best. Which was good timing because Waylon was nominating Apollo to the Triple Crown Trail for WPF and he hoped that this little competition would help her out on the grueling races that were coming up.
As for Roller the four year old's career was really just getting started. She wasn't heavily raced as a three year old, though she'd shown well, the goal was to get her much more competitive in the future and see what she was really made of. Waylon was sure there was more inside her than what she was showing, not that what she was giving them was bad, but just that he didn't think it was all she had.
The morning of the race he had both fillies turned out for a bit, things seemed to be going well and so when it came time to mount up they got a little careless. Apollo was on a longer line than normal and charged out at Roller, seeing his filly in trouble Waylon jumped in and took a hard kick to the chest. His team got them separated and back in their stalls before rushing to his side, he was in pain and would need to get checked out but all he cared about was the horses.
After everyone had calmed down again they got ready and headed over to the paddock, without their leader watching for this race their nerves were at an all time high. Harley especially, worrying about his father while sitting on Roller's back had the filly antsy. She danced in the paddock, she threw a fit on the walk up, and when she was inside the gate she gave big wall eyed looks at the horses around. The moment the gates were thrown open she tore off, awkwardly and not taking directions she came around the pack and gunned for Apollo.

Story:
This was only to be the second race for Apollo with FHF and they hoped they had learned some things from her first one, she'd performed well but they wanted to see if a familiarity with her competition and running mate would help to keep her from trying to take a bite out of the competition...literally. So they'd paired her up with a more mellow, less competitive filly and tentatively hoped for the best. Things were...rocky but not impossible.
Thankfully they'd paired her with Roller, a sound yet docile filly who didn't seem to care at first about the attitude that Apollo displayed. And then she did, and all hell broke loose. They tried to take each other out in training, they bit at each other and fought against their jockeys. It came to the point that they would be "punished" by having to train alone, and "rewarded" by training with each other as workmates when their behavior normalled out. Which...wasn't all that different for Apollo really.
Turned out in pastures near each other they spent pretty much every waking moment semi-together, so when it came time to race day they naturally did all the same things together. But Apollo was looking for her chance to take out the competition this particular morning, and when her young handler let down his guard she went for it. But...she didn't quite get her target.
Cecily got a good hold of her and pulled her off, fussing the way to her stall and Apollo just snorted at her.
"You are a pill, Apollo. I'm not sure what goes on in your head big girl, but that stuff...that isn't the kind of thing you should be doing." She sighed softly and loaded Apollo back in her stall. She'd been working with the filly religiously, and while she felt they had a relationship she knew that just depended on Apollo's mood.
Tacked outside of Apollo's stall on the wall was a sign reading, Keep Your Distance I Bite. And every time Cecily looked at it she frowned, "You're a beautiful girl, Apollo. Pretty, smart, fast. I'm not sure what has you so fired up all the time, but maybe today we put it on the track? A nice, safe, hard run to the finish line?"
The filly didn't give her anything to work with and with another sigh she went to get the tack to start getting her ready for the race, leaving the muzzle on while she worked. "No one doubts your tough, you might be the best filly in training right now, but no one can see it. You're so focused on taking out the horses around you...maybe if you put that energy into winning they'd see you for what you are. A true beast, Waylon sees it and you kicked him in the chest. I see it and you've tried to bite me more than once."
Finally she took the muzzle off and slowly moved to mount up, "So how about we show them huh? You have doubters beautiful, let's make them wish they'd put their wager in on you instead of one of those other fillies out there."

It wouldn't let me edit my comment and at the time, there was no story but I returned to see if there was one and just wow....Like right in the feels. I love Cecily so much! She has so much faith and love for this crazy mare and seems to believe in her no matter what and despite the fact she's winning everyone's hearts, she definitely needs a personality change. I hope Apollo is enjoying her stay and hopefully, when she does return, she'll be in better condition personality wise and has a new out look on things
Also very nice to see that Katalina and MJ are not the only ones who not only believe in her but are willing to mount up and ride her down the track fearlessly!
