The team at FHF had given Jagger a nice long break and turnout after his effort in the Dubai World Cup, he'd come in a tough fifth but had come back to the states completely exhausted. Needing time to get back into condition, and to get weight back on they just let him be a horse, but now that it was starting to turn into fall they knew they'd have to bring him back out if they were going to point him towards the Breeders Cup series again. He'd come in 4th in the dirt mile last year, and had run in several miles recently but since he'd been off and he'd been running so well so long...they thought dropping him to a sprint might be good to bring him back to form. And Colton was more than willing to get back in the saddle and race the handsome stallion.
For weeks they trained on the dirt track at Fox Harbor, until Colton felt that he was ready for a race. With the Breeders Cup races looming he pointed out the Forego Stakes at Saratoga, a quick and historical race. Something he thought would be perfect for the wild bay stallion. And so that's where they were going, Colton shipped out with Jagger, Triton, Harley, and Sabrina. It was a big string, and he'd have to leave after the race to head to Arlington and hook up with his father and Nichi who was already waiting for him.
The morning of the race the sky decided to open up above them, scattered thunderstorms delaying the day and causing everything to be a little wet and dreary. The outlook made Colton grin and he slapped Harley on the back, "Looks like it's mud for us today!" Harley laughed and shook his head, "As long as he's out there and not him and Triton you know he hasn't ever beaten him in the slop." "Nope but he loves it, and that's what matters!"
Thunder cracked overhead and Jagger whinnied, rearing up but Colton had him firmly in hand. "Easy boy, don't you worry about a thing. I got you, you're safe with me." He got him tacked up and they went off to the paddock where they finished everything for the race. Talking to a few people he shook his hands out and rolled his neck, it had been a while since he'd been in the saddle like this and he was a little anxious. Especially with everything that was on the line...
Sooner than he realized they were racing around the track, faster and harder than they had raced in a long time and Colton's mind wandered especially when they passed the grave of Go For Wand, a mare that he admired and a painful memory that had him snapping back into focus...this wasn't the kind of thought he wanted to have when they were running like this!
