Things had been tough for Sunday Memory since the beginning of this season, he'd run hard in his last race and broken down right after he crossed the wire. And now they'd sent him all the way to Dubai to see if he was fit for more races. The horse felt fit, he felt back to his old self but he knew he had a lot to prove. So he'd worked hard on the track for Colton, he'd done well in his workouts, and when the time came he pranced to the gate like he owned the track. Because in his gut he felt like he did.
He ran hard against the game group of three year olds that had met him here, worried that he didn't have the strength to outrun them he let them get in his head and tried to pull up halfway through the race. But Colton urged him on, and called to him to push harder. And he did, opening up and lengthening his lead by the slightest bit. It was enough, his black form crossed the finish line just ahead of the colt named Ruslan.
As he galloped out there was a loving pat on his neck from Colton and he relaxed more. Colt eased him into a stand and sat back on him mumbling something he wasn't sure of, but when he felt another pat on the neck Nichi nibbled on the bit and stamped a hoof.
"That's a good boy!" Colton cried from just behind him before coming down and hugging his neck, "Such a good boy!" Nichi snorted but didn't mind the affection one bit, he knew what he'd done. He'd just beaten all those young bloods! Colton dismounted and pulled on his reins, reaching up to rub his neck more as he just beamed up at the big black stallion.
"You did it boy! You showed them all!" Flicking his ears forward Nichi listened first to Colton and then to the crowd, he'd not heard such roaring in so long...he'd almost forgotten how that felt.
Over the loudspeaker the team could here the commentators discussing his victory, "You know I never thought I'd see a comeback like this again, this horse...his nickname in Japan was the avenging demon can you believe that? And then to see him come back today after his layoff, after his breakdown...it's incredibly impressive. The team at Fox Harbor must really be proud of this guy, he ran his heart out again and showed that he wasn't done yet! It just gives me goosebumps to see horses like that race!"
"He's right big boy, we are so proud of you!" Colton wrapped his arms around his neck again and Nichi lowered his head to chew on his shoulder, the best affection he could show his jockey as he listened to everything around him. He'd done something that he needed to do, and that his team needed him to do...and he wasn't done yet.
