Description
After the explosive attack from Nichi on Takenshi at the last press conference before the Tokyo Yushun things had heated up incredibly. The colt who had always been thought of as a demon by many seemed now to be even more so and it suited him well. When he went to the track in the morning everyone gave him a wide breadth, save for the man who was always on the rail waiting to watch the horse work, and if someone saw him coming towards them on the track they'd pull their horse up and get out of his way. It meant that he trained alone now, more than he really had before and that suited Nichi just fine.
In the barns he had become a true terror, snapping at people and using this new found terror he'd put in them to get what he wanted. Except from Momori who wasn't taking his nonsense. As things got closer the only one who could get the colt out and saddle him was his trainer, a sad sight really for a colt that had before been a bit temperamental but never had deserved this. On race day track officials were very stern about keeping the horse muzzled in the paddock but Momori would have none of it. "He will not bite," he'd say, "He will have his mind in the game."
And on race day that was evident, even as he high stepped into the paddock to the gasps of the on lookers he was focused, gnawing on the bit and foaming a bit, but focused on the task at hand. Because right in front of him was his stablemate, Takenshi, a horse he took great pleasure out of running against recently and one he wanted to beat very badly. After his issues at the press junket he couldn't help but have anger aimed at the bay.
As they paraded out to the track the crowd went a little crazy, yelling both of the horses' names though Takenshi was being heralded more than the black colt who had bested him the last two outs. This was Takenshi's world, and Sunday Memory would be just that after this race. But no one was telling Nichi that, and even if they did he wasn't listening.
Into the gate they went and Nichi slammed against it, letting out a high pitched screech before biting at the metal as the other horses got loaded. It had Takenshi rearing up and kicking at the front of the gate and unsettling the other horses. When the gates were thrown open he dove to the right slamming shoulders with Takenshi before taking the early lead against his jockey's urgings.
Takenshi recovered quickly from being knocked around and tore off after Nichi, cutting through the pack until he ended up against the rail. He dug in, chasing Nichi's tail along the track and doing his best to keep up. The black colt was a beast though and he had to dig deep inside him to stoke the fire that helped bring him alongside Nichi.
Fighting back now, with everything he had Takenshi tried to take the lead only to get snapped at by Nichi. The two slugged it out, bumping and grinding along the way but never breaking stride. On the last turn though Takenshi started to tire, he wasn't built like Nichi and he struggled to keep pace. Nichi used that weakness to pull himself ahead by a nose, a neck, a half length, and then widened his lead by two full lengths as he crossed the finish line.
A roar rose up and it wasn't in delight, it was in anger at the win by the black colt who on the gallop out looked pleased with himself while Takenshi looked exhausted. He'd clipped the golden warrior's wings once more and as he surveyed his kingdom to the boos and cries of foul by the crowd Nichi couldn't be happier with himself.
