Country: USA
Jockey: Barnabas Skellar
Story:
The striking son of Abaddon had traveled around the world once again, leaving Australia a champion having put two of the three legs of the 2YO Triple Crown under his belt he set his eyes on the dirt races of Chile. He'd also come back from Australia with a new permanent rider, Aboriginal born Barnabas Skellar a six foot beast of a jockey who had no problem wrangling the unruly colt. That plus his former rider Harley Givens being out indefinitely, things needed to change. Barnabas had been working with Demon from the moment they touched the ground in Chile, working to figure out what made the colt tick, how to control him, and the best ways to work together. It hadn't been easy, the colt had a lot of bad habits and the biggest one being his temperament.
But Barnabas was just as tenacious as the colt was, and the more that Demon fought, the more Barnabas made him work. By the end of their struggle against each other the colt was tired for the first time in his life, the kind of tired that made him settle into a smooth direct and obedient motion. Of course, Demon hadn't been broken, there was nothing they could do to break the colt's spirit but he had come to an understanding with Barnabas. When that weight settled onto the colt's back, that big six foot beast of a man, Demon listened to what he was being asked to do. And the darnedest thing happened, he did what he was told.
Under the heat of the Chilean sun the colt worked tirelessly, and by race day Barnabas actually felt he was ready for whatever lay ahead. Settling back in the saddle he relaxed, and patted a rough hand on the colt's neck. "What do you say boorie? Are we going to run deadly today?" Barnabas' accent was thick, but the colt's ears flicked behind him to listen to his rider and there was a snort from the colt as he tossed his head a few times. Getting used to the language was...well...different, but Demon was trying.
When they got to the gate the urge to be the hellspawn he was rose up and he slammed against the front and sides a few times before those reins were tightened. "That's enough of that, you're just gammon anyway." There was a tug and Demon's nostrils flared, he was furious! When those gates opened he rushed forward, throwing his head down and attempting to buck off Barnabas. But the jockey wasn't having it, he shifted and threw his weight back like a rodeo rider, tugging the reins to the right away from the pack and running on the far outside, lengths away from the other horses.
"Cut that out boorie, you've got a right shamejob going on and if you don't get it together they're going to put you to pasture." Then he flicked the reins and urged the colt to run, and run Demon did. He exploded, diving back towards the pack and running like his life depended on it. Sure, the Fox Harbor team was no where near retiring the colt, but hey a little friendly threatening went a long way right?
