Things were coming to an end for Nichi's career, the big black stallion had an incredibly trying season traveling all over the world, here there and everywhere. And proving that at seven you could still be a fantastic race horse. The team had decided that his last career start would be the Longines Turf, though he could easily have run in the Mile or the Classic it seemed fitting to renew the rivalry of Takenshi and Sunday Memory in one last great turf race. Takenshi would race at least one more season, but for Nichi...this was it. And the team was treating it with the reverence it deserved, special attention was being given to every detail. They were even hosting an after Breeders Cup party for any that wanted to attend, not because they expected to win anything but because they wanted to celebrate the season and celebrate the retirement of two of their runners!
Getting Nichi prepared for the Breeders cup had been fairly strenuous, the turf course at Santa Anita was unlike any he had ever raced before. With a 6.5 furlong downhill turf course headed into a right-hand turn, making it the only one in America to do so, and then two left-hand turns to the finish line...it's brutal. And not something that the team had ever had to train for before. They'd been working on developing a downhill training area at the farm for some time, but it wasn't ready for this just yet...so they did the best they could, they trained in the woods over hilly terrain, they put Nichi to his paces on their flat course, and basically just making sure he was ready for anything. Colton had the mount and they all knew what kind of horse they had.
But they also knew that competition was incredibly stiff for the Longines Turf. SVS Not your Average Joe and SVS Volcanic Ashleigh were the hardknocking team from SpringValleyStables that the team had been battling all year long, so they knew they would bring their A-game and it would be difficult to beat them. Northerly Flight was a terrifying horse to compete against, Nutter being mouthy was the least of their problems...it was the record that they had to worry about. Nutter was a phenomenal champion, and would be hard to be beat too. And CI Winchesterlikethegun couldn't be forgotten either, they hadn't raced against him much in the team's career but they liked what they saw. Heck they liked it enough to buy one of his colts, who was racing today too! WSA Off Key Anthem was the youngster that had just come onto the scene, and was already doing pretty well for himself. He was an unknown but he wasn't unknown either. The betting in this race was all over the place, it was hard to pick a favorite and harder for the betters to have any idea who could win. Because they all had earned their keep in their careers.
But if age was a factor...the two warhorses would have something to say about all this. Takenshi and Sunday Memory had been around the block for a while, and they had done their fair share of winning and globetrotting. But when they stepped out on that track for the Longines Turf it was like their 3 year old rivalry had been renewed all over again. The handsome bay was just in front of Nichi in the post parade and the moment that the black stallion caught sight of him he lunged forward, knocking Colton out of the irons and nearly taking the lead pony off with him. But the handler got him under control and helped Colton get his feet back in.
"Someone is feeling their oats today..." The lead pony rider offered up while they worked to get everything under control again.
"No he just threw the gauntlet down, these two hate each other." Takenshi had been eyeing the black stallion while he trotted sideways to the gate ever since, but that didn't seem to unnerve Nichi, instead he stood loud and proud and offered the crowd a real sight with his high stepping. "And they're trash talking, it's going to be hell in that gate...this race is going to be nuts."
In the gate Nichi was his normal rude self, throwing himself and causing a lot of commotion because he wanted to GO, and once it cracked open he broke free with a powerful kick and surged to try and take the lead away from any frontrunning challengers. He WANTED it, and he was going to run down whoever tried to take it from him. That fearsome beast of a warrior was back, and he wanted nothing more than to show every one of these horses that HE was the avenging demon and no one could take that title away from.
Looking over his shoulder Colton spotted Haru and Takenshi and he knew that the golden warrior was going to take it to them too...as well as everyone else in this race. All he hoped, was that Nichi made it across the finishline without doing any sort of damage to himself or anyone else!
