• Story:
Preparing for the Breeders Cup this year was a feat for the Fox Harbor Team, with ten horses racing in seven races the team was more than feeling the pressure. But two races in particular had their hearts pounding in their chests. And one of them had two of their best turf horses going against some of the toughest horses in training, the Longines Turf was another face off between their champions Takenshi and Sunday Memory, another showdown that they both were excited and fearful over.
The fear came from these two warriors battling it out again, knowing that against each other they were vicious and formidable. Knowing that Nichi had already injured himself exerting too much energy to win this year alone...and knowing that this was to be the stallion's last race. It just had them exteremly unnerved. But the focus right now was the potential that they both were showing, none more than Takenshi who had come a long way since he was rescued at the beginning of the year.
In his works Waylon watched the stallion grow stronger and stronger, more closely resembling that brave three year old he'd watched run in the Japanese Triple Crown. It was nice to see the bay stallion bounce back from the abuse he suffered after his Japanese career ended, and the horse was thriving as he began to run more and more. Waylon was giving him another year of racing before the war horse would retire with his head held high, not that he couldn't now but he felt like if he retired him too soon...he'd never be able to say the horse had retired well and fully done with the track. There would always be something he hadn't finished.
Picking the rider for Takenshi had been easy, Haru was the obvious choice that and it let everyone else focus on the mounts they knew best. Haru, had known Takenshi most of his life. He'd been raised in the barn watching him in his 2 and 3 year old campaigns. Of course he knew Nichi too...but this was the horse he had learned to ride on. This was the horse his father had trusted him to work in the mornings, and this is the horse he hoped to do big things with, hoped to win with.
The turf course at Santa Anita was different, it was a downhill course, that had three turns. The first of which was a right to a left that led over a patch of dirt, the rest were all lefts. And training over the course had proven to be...different. Takenshi was used to the sweeping turns of Japan, so it was taking some time for him to adjust to these more...American turns. And that was okay, okay by Haru anyway because they were coming out near the rail. He could stay tucked into the rail until they made the first turn and then kick away.
At least that had been the plan...right until they broke free from the gate. With Nichi on the outside of Takenshi the stallion did what he did best, run fast and hard to try and take the lead. But as Haru fought to tell Takenshi to wait the stallion had other plans. He saw his big black stallion of a target and pushed hard, he wanted to run right alongside him but Haru managed to put him in a stalking position just off his right hip. Still...they had seen this play out time and time again over the career of these tallions and now...they were going to see it one last time. Because as they thundered over the grass the knowledge that Nichi would never race again rolled through Haru's mind effecting how he manuevered his stallion and urging Nichi on with the breath of Takenshi hitting his hip.
