Description
You know I'm back like I never left;
Another sprint, another step;
Another day, another breath;
Been chasing dreams, but I never slept;
I got a new attitude and a lease on life;
And some peace of mind;
Seek and I find I can sleep when I die;
Wanna piece of the pie, grab the keys to the ride.
- Glorious by Macklemore feat. Skylar Grey -
FHF Make Her Mark
Trainer and Owner Waylon Givens originally bought the filly as a yearling to race on the turf, and while she was a career worst in her debut (finishing 5th) she very quickly bounced back to take three ungraded races, and a G2 on turf before taking on the dirt for the first time in the Alcibiades Stakes where she proved she was more than a grass pony. Her final two starts of her 2YO season consisted of the Juvenile Fillies on dirt (finishing 3rd behind Masquerade and SparedNoExpense) as well as the Starlet Stakes (finishing 3rd behind Saint Laurent and Starlight Express) both of which she came out of strong, but looking like dirt maybe wasn't her preferred surface. In the beginning of her 3YO season Fox Harbor Farms pointed her still towards the Kentucky Oaks, and she immediately started the season with a G1 win in the Silverbulletday Stakes before being shipped to Australia to campaign for the Triple Crown.
"Honestly it was a pipe dream, we went to Australia for the Rosehill thinking that it would be a good prep for the heath in Europe. Our goal was the Filly Triple Crown, but something magical happened." Said co-owner and jockey Harlan Givens who piloted her to the Triple Crown. "She took to Australia like she was meant to be there, and the way she trained was just out of this world! I still get queasy thinking about how amazing all of that was...I don't think I'll ever stop feeling that electricity as we crossed the wire in the Australian Derby to take the TC...I definitely never want to!"
But what most people don't realize is that while running in Australia she was being shipped to Japan to compete in the Triple Crown there as well, winning the first leg in the Oka Sho and then shipping between the Randwick Guineas and the Australian Derby to compete in the 1000 Guineas and the Epsom Oaks winning both of those legs of the British Filly Triple Crown in smashing style. The filly from the beginning of her Aus-TC campaign raced across five countries and four continents before her season started to slow down. It's no wonder when she was tasked with the Black-Eyed Susan Stakes that she showed the first signs of weakness...finishing 2nd. It's true, the filly, even when tasked with a travel schedule that could put most horses down for months, managed to hold tough in a hard string of competition to finish second.
But now here she is, competing for another top honor. She's running to add Breeders' Cup Champion to her already increasing resume of accomplishments, and the team at Fox Harbor say they aren't done just yet. In fact, she and stablemate FT Triton have been nominated for the Melbourne Cup, a return to Australia for the newly minted Triple Crown winner and another chance at the Cup from FHF's other reconginizable turf superstar.
When asked what they planned to do after the Melbourne Cup her jockey just grinned, "Well we have a lot planned for our little princess, but first and foremost she's going to get a bit of turnout time and then we plan on campaigning her next year. Maybe take a shot at a few things if she seems up to it, but ultimately she makes the decisions, she's the boss. Always has been."
Could the Fox Harbor team have a filly on their hands capable of anything? They're cautiously optimistic about it, and honestly, why shouldn't they be? This little filly came out of nowhere, in a stable just a few seasons old and has already rocked their world once...will she do it again? What will happen when she faces off against her stablemate? Will the two turf stars of FHF burn out or burn brighter? So many questions! And no one at FHF seems willing to speculate.
The only thing we could get was a bystander account of her last training session, "I tell you one thing, when I saw that filly on dirt I thought 'heh, she'll be nothing but an allowance horse' and then I saw her on the green stuff and got absolutely terrified. She's a monster! I get to see her work sometimes, and I swear when she hits the grass fire burns in her eyes and she becomes alive. That last work for the Filly and Mare Turf was off the charts good...and scary. I fear for any horse that gets in her way."
We don't know what will happen when Meme loads into the gate for the Filly and Mare Turf, but we do know after spending some time with the team at Fox Harbor that she is well loved and truly does make all the decisions. The team is cohesive and caring, tending to all their horses with the same affection one would expect from a much smaller stable. We look forward to seeing Meme run, and to the future this grey beast has on the track, as well as who she ends up being bred to when the times come.

FHF Make Her Mark, the filly that stunned the Australian racing community when she shipped in to take the Australian Triple Crown looks to stretch her Grade 1 Turf Stakes winning streak in the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf at Del Mar. Affectionately called the "Princess of the Stable" the little filly is not known for making too many mistakes on the track, and here lately when her hooves touch the grass she's proven to be unstoppable.Trainer and Owner Waylon Givens originally bought the filly as a yearling to race on the turf, and while she was a career worst in her debut (finishing 5th) she very quickly bounced back to take three ungraded races, and a G2 on turf before taking on the dirt for the first time in the Alcibiades Stakes where she proved she was more than a grass pony. So I've always wanted to do an article style story for one of my entries, and who not do it for Meme? This year has been pretty amazing for her, and it's fun to think what a publication like the Paulick Report or Bloodhorse would write if given the chance. Anyway, this was a fun image to do, and I honestly can't wait to do more with her! Love this little filly!!
