Story:
Nichi had been having an amazing season so far, which pleased the team at FHF beyond measure. They wanted their old man to retire on a strong note, and they couldn't think of a stronger one than a push for the Breeders' Cup Longines Turf to send him off. Their plan for him had been coming slowly to an end, and their future plans were still being figured out at this point. They knew for sure he'd have a second career, and he'd already started it. With a polo competition and a future hunter team competition they were just testing the waters to see what he enjoyed half as much as he did flat racing. Cecily said she'd love to try him over hurdles, Colton wanted him to transition to something a little less stressful on his legs, and no one could agree on anything.
What they could agree on was how their big black stallion looked to be in outstanding condition as he trained for the Arlington Million, he was feisty and ferocious as always on the track. Putting AS Silver Brumby as his work mate was a good move, it gave him a speedy target and he challenged him hard, what they hadn't expected though was him trying to take a nip out of the handsome cremello boy. He hadn't tried to bite another horse in over a year and when they finished the workout Colton had concerns. Either they were facing the return of their extremely competitive and ruthless racer, or something was off.
The morning of the race Nichi was running hot, he was up on his toes nipping and bucking. Nothing was wrong with him just that he was amped up by the crowd. They asked the stewards to saddle him up away from the rest of the field in a quieter part of the paddock, and to be brought out without a lead pony. Which was allowed, thankfully, otherwise they weren't sure if Nichi would have been DQ'd before they even got to run! He was loaded up quickly and in the gate he lurched and kicked up a storm, throwing a royal fit as he waited for that gate to swing wide.
The moment it did he was off like a bolt of lightning, black lightning tearing the turf to pieces as he galloped. Colton was practically standing up on his back trying to slow him down, and suddenly he did slowly easing himself up. It was like that great big machine had a gear shift, but instead of shifting up like he normally did he downshifted to coast. Colton could only frown, he wasn't sure what that was all about but he hoped that his great stallion had more gas in the tank to make it down the stretch! If only he knew why he'd slowed was because he'd taken a massive chunk out of his hind fetlock!
