Kelpie by can-o-meat Kelpie by can-o-meat
It's a kelpie. Yay. These little critters get doodled all over my stuff... tehehe. XD So, when I had to do my collagraph, I decided to try my hand at a kelpie.
Looks like the collagraph works for him, eh?
This is actually just a sample print I did for one of the new kids, so it's really only a small portion of the actual print (which can't fit into my scanner, so it'll get photographed and loaded later). Original is about three and a half times this size.
I still like this, though.
I used newspaper for the 'wave,' a dryer fluffy (sheet, but fluffy is the word I use for them... hehe) for the 'beach,' the rest of the 'water' is just the board I left blank, the 'mountains' in the foreground were printing paper, 'mountains' in the background was a napkin, kelpie itself was printing paper that I dug into for the ribs effect, it's mane and tail were individual pieces of newspaper I cut, frayed, and glued. It took five hours. Ouch.

This is just one of the ideas I have for what a kelpie looks like in it's true form: zombie equine with a mane and tail of seaweed. ^_^ I'm silly, aren't I??

Kelpie: Supernatural shape-shifting horse of Celtic folklore, believed to haunt the lochs and rivers of Scotland and Ireland. It appears to travelers as a beautiful horse (though, this is not it's true form) beside a body of water. When the traveler attempts to ride it, the kelpie plunges them both into the water to eat the traveler.
Collagraph: Produced by gluing all sorts of things to a stiff poster board, then putting this sort of 'glaze' over the top of it and letting it harden. A day later, you put ink all over it, wipe of the excess, rub a cheese cloth over it, do MORE wiping until you have just the right amount of ink. Now you can print. You put the thing ink-up on the slab, put your paper on top of it, then put a blanket across the top, and roll it through the press so they smash together evenly. Once it pops out the other side, you're praying it worked. I think I made about ten prints to get four semi-good onces. Each inking took about fifteen minutes. God. But this one was worth it!! ^_^

Beautifully sinister, this kind of reminds me of the last segment of the Disney film 'Fantasia', have you seen it?

Wow, interesting way of looking at it.

Have you seen Fantasia? It looks like the skeleton animals at the end that fly up to the huge winged devil guy. If you haven't, then excuse my rambling =]

This is one of the best pieces I have seen in a long while. I love the mood it sets , and the tonality and wash like qualities gives it a sort of dark glow. I thought at first the composition looked a little strange and cramped, but you explained that when you mentioned this is only a detail and not the whole piece.

Great work!

Again, thank you so much for the fave!!
