When The Time is Ripe

When the Time is Ripe: The most favorable time to do something.

William Shakespeare is believed to have first used this in1 Henry IV  (1597)  (And, may have originated the phrase.).

“...by letters shall direct your course/ When time is ripe, which will be suddenly…” -

-1 Henry IV , Act 1, Scene 3, Line 631-2, from Open Source Shakespeare.org

[The American Heritage Dictionary of Idioms, Christine Ammer [NPR Interview], 2003, 1997, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Publishing Company]

---------------------------

Inspired by The Gleaners (Des glaneuses) is an oil painting, by Jean-François Millet completed in 1857.

It depicts three peasant women gleaning a field of stray stalks of wheat after the harvest. In 1891, the painting was donated to the Louvre.[4]

It now resides in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.

Lancet: Pollution causing more deaths worldwide than war or smoking:

The Associated Press, Posted: Oct 20, 2017 7:51 AM ET

“…more than all war and violence; more than smoking, hunger or natural disasters; More than AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria combined.

“The financial cost from pollution-related death, [and] sickness... is equally massive.. costing…. about 6.2 per cent of the global economy.”

Or, Time…

Memo:

We are all gleaners of Time.

As the expression goes, “Gather ye rosebuds, while ye may.”

Of course, not everyone gets to glean as much from the fields as they might.

Sustainable Energy References [Wikipedia]:

[1] Solar Water Heating (SWH)  is the conversion of sunlight into heat for water heating using a solar thermal collector.[1]

[2] Wind Turbines converts the wind's kinetic energy into electrical energy.

[3] Solar power is the conversion of energy from sunlight into electricity, either directly using photovoltaics (PV), indirectly using concentrated solar power, or a combination. Photovoltaic cells convert light into an electric current using the photovoltaic effect.[1]

[4] Micro Hydro  is a type of hydroelectric power that typically produces from 5 kW to 100 kW of electricity using the natural flow of water. Installations below 5 kW are called pico hydro.[1]

[5] Geothermal power is power generated by geothermal energy. Geothermal electricity generation is currently used in 24 countries,[1] while geothermal heating is in use in 70 countries.[2]

[6] Heat Recovery Ventilation (HRV) is an energy recovery ventilation system using a heat recovery ventilator, heat exchanger, air exchanger, or air-to-air heat exchanger which employs a cross flow or counter-flow heat exchanger.

HRVs provide fresh air and improved climate control, while also saving energy by reducing heating (and cooling) requirements.[2]

Energy recovery ventilators (ERVs) are closely related; but, ERVs also transfer the humidity between the intake and exhaust.

Memo:

I can’t help but wonder if the 20th and 19th Centuries were the time to “go big, or go home”, if the future doesn’t belong to micro-hydro, small scale wind farms, individual buildings with solar boilers, PV cells, and HRVs.

While some emerging economies have opted to try to best the west, with ginormous power projects; maybe micro-adaptations would be cheaper and easier to implement, with cumulative benefits, to power generation, and energy conservation:

Like the tiny, feathers that saved theropods, from going extinct, while sauropods, who opted to go bigger, didn’t survive.

Just a thought…
