The Phoenix Project: Shipyards
Published:The Phoenix Project: Shipyards
“Captain, you look like your going to say, ‘Leia, I am your Father!’, wearing that respirator,” the crew Chief said.
“And, if her Father had checked the ground and his equipment, before lunging at Rei’s Uncle, he might not have needed a respirator,” Captain Rin laughed.
“Always look after your gear, Chief,” the Captain reminded her.
“And, it’ll look after you,” the Chief, concluded.
“That’s what my Gammer always said,” the Captain nodded, remembering.
“You know what Ching Shih said, ‘Battles are won, or lost, by choosing the ground.’ But, she might have been quoting Sun Tzu’s Art of War,” the Captain admitted.
"Right, of course, Cap," the Chief nodded. (Actually, she wasn't sure what the Captain was thinking about.)
Then, getting back to the business, at hand, Captain Rin asked, “What’s our E.T.C. [Estimated Time of Completion], Chief?”
The Chief scratched her temple, which Captain Rin thought was a dangerous habit, holding a welding torch; she wished the Chief would cure herself of, before searing her off her head; or, somebody else’s.
“About Six U’s [A Unit being 15 minutes],” she said. "But, that's just a guess, Cap."
“Make it so,” the Captain said. “Let’s have her ready to go at Oh-Six-Hundred, Chief.”
“Aye, Captain,” the Chief Petty Office said, getting back to her work.
Most of the ships and buildings were made of biopolymers, and ran on power cells, or biodiesel;
But, there were still a few metal parts, which couldn’t be rendered by the 3D printers, that needed to be smelted, welded, and repaired, from time to time. A few months ago, they'd had an intake valve that was giving them trouble, and needed to be replaced.
The Captain looked over at the biospheres and harbour, where the heart of The Phoenix Project began. She shook her head.
It was hard to imagine. This had been part of the DEW Line, NWS, NORAD, and the Cold War, before serving as a Seed Vault; until, the permafrost began to melt.
And then, finally people expanded the site to research ways to avoid the Progress Trap of the 20th Century, and bring civilization into the next millennia.
She had her fingers crossed that they would make it.

Memo:
The scene shows the Walkers [Mecha], the crew of The Phoenix Project use when surveying the remnants of urban areas, to protect themselves from the residual toxins in the cities.
And, the planes, made with biopolymers, and powered by fuel cells or biodiesel.
It’s clear the internal combustion engine and petrochemicals have taken humanity about as far as they can; and, if society doesn’t quickly adapt, Climate Change, fueled by petrochemicals, is going to drive civilization into an early grave.

Theme: Make a piece inspired by The Black Eyed Peas - Where Is The Love?
Due Date: September 29th, 2017

Memo:
It seems like half the world is on fire and the other half under water this year. And, people are still arguing that Climate Change isn’t as important as tax cuts for the wealthy and the petrochemical industry, without holding anyone accountable for the cost and quality of the water table.
The world has gone mad, if anyone thinks they can buy health, when the water table is contaminated; the oceans choked with petro-plastics; and, consumed with fire, or drowned in floods.
It seems like we’re caught in a “Progress Trap”: petrochemicals have proved so successful; politicians are convinced they’re the best way out of our political difficulties; when clearly they’re continued use is only exacerbating the problems: literally fanning the flames.

Notes:
[1] 3D printing, or additive manufacturing (AM), refers to rendering a three-dimensional object[1] under computer control .[2]
Objects can be of almost any shape from a 3D model
[2] Bioplastics are plastics derived from renewable biomass, such asvegetable fats and oils, corn starch, or microbiota.[1]
Bioplastic can be made from agricultural by-products. Fossil-fuel plastics (also called petrobased polymers), are derived from petroleum or natural gas.
Bioplastics can be composed of starches, cellulose, biopolymers, and other materials.
[3] Tidal energy is a form of hydropower that converts tides into electricity. Tidal generators can be even more reliable than wind energy and solar power, as a source of renewable energy. The earliest examples date to the Middle Ages and Roman times.[2]
[4] The Phoenix, in Greek mythology, is a long-lived bird that regenerates..[2]
[5] The Phoenix Project uses designs similar to the pods used in Ontario Place, for the biospheres, built in Toronto Harbour, to manage wave stresses.
[6] Radomes: a portmanteau of radar and dome, a radome is an enclosure that protects a microwave , radar), or antenna. These are geodesic.

Further Notes:
[1] Vertical axis wind turbine (VAWTs) are a type of wind turbine where the main rotor shaft is set transverse to the wind. This allows the generator and gearbox to be located close to the ground, facilitating service and repair. VAWTs do not need to be pointed into the wind.[1]
[2] Solar power is the conversion of sunlight into electricity, either directly using photovoltaics (PV), or indirectly using concentrated solar power (CSP).
[3] Solar water heating (SWH) is the conversion of sunlight into renewable energy for water heating using a solar thermal collector.
[4] Y chromosome is one of the two sex chromosomes in humans (the other is the X chromosome). The sex chromosomes form one of the 23 pairs of humanchromosomes in each cell.
[5] YCD- “Y-Chromosome Deterioration” hypothesizes that Y chromosomes are more vulnerable and may be reduced or eliminated in some mammalian populations.
“The Y chromosome is subject to higher rates of variation… Ys degrade inexorably… There is evidence that the Y in other mammals has undergone… degradation and already disappeared in some…” Is the Y chromosome disappearing?, On August 31, 2011 at the 18th International Chromosome Conference in Manchester, Jenny Graves debated the demise of the mammalian Y chromosome.
[6] Endocrine disruptor are chemicals that may interfere with the body's endocrine system and produce adverse developmental, reproductive, neurological, and immune effects in both humans and wildlife.
Endocrine Disruptors - NIEHS - National Institutes of Health
“Found in many household and industrial products, endocrine disruptors are substances that "interfere with natural hormones that are responsible for… homeostasis (normal cell metabolism)."[4] [7]
[7] A Fuel cell stores electricity through a chemical reaction of positively charged hydrogen ions with oxygen…
[8] Light pollution is excessive, misdirected, or obtrusive artificial light. A global dark-sky movement has emerged, with concerned people campaigning to reduce the amount of light pollution. The International Dark-Sky Association (IDA) is one non-profit NGO.
A full cut off fixture, when correctly installed, reduces the chance for light to escape above the plane of the horizontal.
Decreased skyglow of amber and red lights preserves the luminous efficacy of white lights, while resulting in less energy consumption and less light pollution.
[9] Light-emitting diodes [LEDs] are a two-lead semiconductor, which emits light when activated.
LEDs have many advantages over incandescent lights, including lower energy consumption, longer lifetime, improved physical robustness, smaller size, and faster switching.

I had a couple of electric airplanes, as a kid. I always hoped there’d be electric planes I could learn to fly; maybe someday.
It seems I’ll have to move, though I’m not sure where I can afford to go.
