Terra 3k: A Mutant Pear

Terra 3k: A Mutant Pear

Myths often have a basis in fact.

So, maybe The Biting Pear of Salamanca, by ursulav is more than just a legend.

Terra 3k: A Mutant Pear-

Rin looked at the sample pear Len was testing, and was surprised to see it smiling back. “I hope that’s a joke,” she scowled, laughing.

“I don’t know,” Len shrugged. “Could be one of those spliced GMO’s gone feral; or, rads; didn’t Madame Curie have a place around here?”

Rin shook her head, “You’re sure it’s not a hologram, projected from your comm link?”

“Oh! Do you think I’d do that?” Len gasped, in mock chagrin.

Rin rubbed the pressure points between her thumb and index finger. The city air was still heavy, though much improved, “I shudder to think of who thought that was a good idea.”

“Well, we shouldn’t have to meet them,” Len said.

“I guess that’s something,” Rin agreed.

“Maybe, it’s a ‘Bark-let Pear’,” she suggested. “They're supposed to have some bite.”

This is part of the same survey mission of urban centres from Terra 3rd Millennium: Urban Recce, for Brave New World Contest, sponsored by kuschelirmel;

And, Terra 3k: Early Morning Recce, for the Nothing Extra Contest, hosted by Stewed-Tomatoes;

Which is a continuation of The Phoenix Project, Terra: 3K CE, Expedition, and Rocket Robin Hood Rescues Marion From the Castle, set in the astounding year 3k.

The Phoenix Project was started in the mid-20th Century to develop technologies and archives to survive Nuclear War and Climate Change.

In the mid-21st Century, after decades of cutbacks to government programs and infrastructure, along with unrestricted mining and petrol exploration, the global economy and ecology collapsed.

Without maintenance, the nuclear power plants and waste management systems failed, contaminating the surrounding areas.

It is only now, in the 3rd Millennium, that those areas are beginning to recover.
