Terra 3: 3K CE

This was submitted to The New Millennium Contest, hosted by CRPhotomanipulation.

It's the year three thousand, Common Era [3K CE], on Earth [Terra 3,Third planet, in the Terran solar system].

The environment on Earth has been rehabilitated after the fires, flooding, and political crises of the 21st Century.

Reforestation and petrol eating organisms have largely healed the atmosphere, revitalized the planet’s lungs, regrown the forests; and, enzymes have safely processed plastic and radioactive contamination, left over from previous generations.

The health of the oceans and watersheds have been restored. The flaura and fauna have recovered. And, some new species have evolved to fill niches left vacant, by extinctions from climate change.

After a series of boom and bust cycles, the human population has stabilized; and, humanity has started exploring and terraforming planetoids, throughout the galaxy.

As the saying goes, “Climate is the law giver everywhere,” Lew Wallace, Ben-Hur (1880).

Thanks to CRPhotomanipulation for hosting this interesting theme, and to all the stock artists.

Thanks to insomnia [and misreading the deadline date] it was possible to get this done in time (before Junes 22nd).

Another Day In The Astounding Year 3,000-

The comm link on her wrist communicator chimed that there was an incoming message from the air traffic control tower. “Sas, here,” she answered, tapping her comm.

“Ren, here,” she acknowledged from her cockpit. “And, Li,” she added from her comm. The tower relayed their signals over Sas’ comm link, projecting their holograms, from her wrist comm.

“Auto Tower, cleared us for final approach,” Ren said. “Echo that,” Li added.

“OK,” Sas acknowledged. “See you soon. Sas out.”

[For convenience’s sake, the dialogue will be transposed into Standard English from “Nu Glish”, an amalgam of the world’s languages and text messaging shorthand, which contracts most phrases and spellings into monosyllables.]

“Right then,” Sas said, tapping out her comm. “That’s Ren and Li. They’ll be landing soon.

“So, one last question for school. ‘What was the primary cause of the ‘Eco Revolution’ of the mid-21st Century?” She announced. Everyone looked a little puzzled. “Any suggestions? Before Chi and Claire take you out to the hangar for piloting practice?” She asked.

Everyone cheered. “Anything?” Sas reiterated.

“The Year of Fire and Water?” Kes suggested.

Sas nodded, “Right, the destruction of forests in ocean rim countries and flooding in coastal cities, caused wide scale economic reforms,” she agreed.

“What about the Eco Refugees?” Val said. “And, The Olympic Flu was worse in some places than The Spanish Flu, the previous century.”

Sas hummed and hawed, “Yes, maybe, shifts in demographics can have a huge effect on socio-political dynamics.”

“Cas said the UN would never have reached an agreement on environmental policies, if it weren’t for YCD, reducing male populations,” Kas said. [Y-Chromosome Deterioration, Y-Chromosomes being more susceptible to pollution.]

Sas laughed, “Yes, well, we can discuss that further, in our next session.”

“I think it was the USA's First Lady Drumpf’s gaff, at the rally, when she was recorded saying that if people wanted clean air and food, or security, they could pay for it themselves,” Jet piped in.

“That was certainly a factor,” Sas agreed. “Her quip about The Paris Accords, ‘Let them pay for their own clean air!’, somebody caught on their phone and posted, certainly went viral overnight.”

“But, was it any worse than Queen Marie Antoinette saying, ‘Let them eat cake,’ in the 18th Century?” Kas asked.

“We know that she actually said it,” Jet argued.

“And, a lot more people saw it,” Kim agreed. “It was everywhere, like you said, overnight millions of views on the net, within minutes of her saying it. It went viral, complete media saturation.”

“That’s true. Be prepared to argue that and your other points at our next session. Class adjourned,” Sas announced. And, everyone cheered.

“Don’t forget to tend the garden, when you get back! Remember, you have your module on the 'Three Sisters' and companion planting!” She called out, reminding them.

“Yes, M’am!” The class shouted back, over their shoulders, as they and their animals ran to the airfield.

Sas looked to Chi, shaking her head. “Kids today,” she smiled.

Chi shrugged, “Were we any different?”

“Human nature,” Kes laughed. “There’s nothing like it. My Gammer and Aunt always said so.”

And, they followed the girls and alpacas off to the airfield.

Memo:

The characters and scenarios are original.

Please respect copyright.

This is set in the “astounding year three thousand” like “Rocket Robin Hood Rescues Marion From the Castle”. Although, not directly related, they do share some elements.

Hopefully it won't be too long before people, businesses and governments remember that you can't eat, drink, or breath money, and stop stealing the ground out from under themselves and their children.

The irony is that if companies and countries were required to take responsibility for the environmental impact and health repercussions of their businesses practices; and, the environmental laws, which are often already on the books, were actually enforced, the world would be a healthier place to live, literally overnight.

It could happen.

Notes:

[1] Vertical axis wind turbine (VAWTs) are a type of wind turbine where the main rotor shaft is set transverse to the wind. This allows the generator and gearbox to be located close to the ground, facilitating service and repair. VAWTs do not need to be pointed into the wind.[1]

[2] Solar power is the conversion of sunlight into electricity, either directly using photovoltaics (PV), or indirectly using concentrated solar power (CSP).

[3] Solar water heating (SWH) is the conversion of sunlight into renewable energy for water heating using a solar thermal collector.

[4] Y chromosome  is one of the two sex chromosomes in humans (the other is the X chromosome). The sex chromosomes form one of the 23 pairs of humanchromosomes in each cell.

[5] YCD- “Y-Chromosome Deterioration” hypothesizes that Y chromosomes are more vulnerable and may be reduced or eliminated in some mammalian populations.

“The Y chromosome is subject to higher rates of variation… Ys degrade inexorably… There is evidence that the Y in other mammals has undergone… degradation and already disappeared in some…” Is the Y chromosome disappearing?, On August 31, 2011 at the 18th International Chromosome Conference in Manchester, Jenny Graves debated the demise of the mammalian Y chromosome.

[6] Endocrine disruptor are chemicals that may interfere with the body's endocrine system and produce adverse developmental, reproductive, neurological, and immune effects in both humans and wildlife.

Endocrine Disruptors - NIEHS - National Institutes of Health

“Found in many household and industrial products, endocrine disruptors are substances that "interfere with natural hormones  that are responsible for… homeostasis (normal cell metabolism)."[4] [7]

[7] A Fuel cell  stores electricity through a chemical reaction of positively charged hydrogen ions with oxygen…

[8] Light pollution is excessive, misdirected, or obtrusive artificial light.  A global dark-sky movement has emerged, with concerned people campaigning to reduce the amount of light pollution. The International Dark-Sky Association (IDA) is one non-profit NGO.

A full cutoff fixture, when correctly installed, reduces the chance for light to escape above the plane of the horizontal.

Decreased skyglow of amber and red lights preserves the luminous efficacy of white lights, while resulting in less energy consumption and less light pollution.

[9] Light-emitting diodes [LEDs] are a two-lead semiconductor, which emits light when activated.

LEDs have many advantages over incandescent lights, including lower energy consumption, longer lifetime, improved physical robustness, smaller size, and faster switching.

[10] Common Era Common Era or Current Era, abbreviated CE, is used as an alternative to "Anno Domini" ("in the year of the Lord"), abbreviated AD. The system uses BCE as an abbreviation for "before the Common (or Current) Era" and CE as an abbreviation for "Common Era".

[11] Marie Antoinette was  Queen of France (1774–91).

[12] Let them eat cake is the traditional translation of the French phrase "Qu'ils mangent de la brioche". However, there is no evidence that Queen Marie-Antoinette ever said it.

[13] Spanish flu  or The 1918 flu pandemic (January 1918 – December 1920) was an unusually deadly influenza pandemic, the first of the two pandemics involving H1N1 influenza virus.[1] It infected 500 million people across the world.[2]

[14] Three Sisters (agriculture) are the three main agricultural crops of various Native American groups in North America: winter squash, maize (corn), and climbing beans.

[15] Companion planting is the planting of different crops together for pest control, pollination, since it provides habitat for beneficial creatures, maximizes use of space, and increases crop productivity.[1] Companion planting is a form of polyculture.

[16] Organic horticulture, [or Organic Farming - davidsuzuki.org‎]is the growing of fruits, vegetables, flowers, and ornamental plants, following the principles of organic agriculture in soil building and conservation, pest management, and heirloom variety preservation.

The term “organic” was no longer used after the 21st Century, since chemically dependent and industrial agriculture was replaced by more sustainable, natural, and mixed agricultural methods, such as:

Forest gardening, used since prehistoric times, a low maintenance sustainable food production and agroforestry system based on woodland ecosystems;

And, Biodynamic farming  based on the teachings of Rudolf Steiner;

And, no-till  or other bio intensive methods.

Just saw this from Dr. Jane Goodall, ""We must remember that we have not inherited this planet from our parents, we have borrowed it from our children.... It is not too late. There is still a window of time, but we must act now to save our planet!" ‪#‎WorldOceansDay‬ www.facebook.com/janegoodall/p…
