Ophelia's Resurgence

Ophelia's Resurgence

This is a variation on Ophelia's Renaissance.

Thanks to ZillegasArt for posting the  Ophelia, Resurrected Princess Line Art.

And, to all the Stock Artists.

Ophelia  is a character in William Shakespeare's play Hamlet. She is a young noblewoman of Denmark, the daughter of Polonius, sister of Laertes, and potential wife of Prince Hamlet.

As usual, I didn’t read the description; so, I wasn’t sure why Ophelia had been reborn.

My guess was that she was the character from the play; and, that while her clothes had dragged her under the water; so, it looked like she had drowned:

The current had swept her away from the castle, where her dress had snagged on a tree, growing over the river;

And, she had managed to drag herself out of the stream, to join Hamlet on his quest to avenge his Father’s murder, by the usurper, Claudius, and retake the kingdom.

It isn't unlikely that she would know how to swim [though everyone should].

“This is Ophelia! I was commissioned to draw her by a Redditor.

I'm pretty pleased with the line art in this one. It might be one of my favorites thus far!”

Nota Bene:

Since this Ophelia is a warrior, she has quite the arsenal, with
daggers, and throwing knives, tucked into her greaves, and leather straps and braces, and, a Rapier;

And, a formidable Composite bow [horn, sinew, and wood], which seems to have a stabilizer, [for vibration/ balance], and a quiver full of arrows.

N.B.- For this version, she has a simplified Composite Bow, without the stabilizer. And, her clothes are a little dirtier.

This is a little small for the period, like Arya’s “Needle”, in A Game of Thrones, facing off against Brienne’s  Longsword.

[Memo: I strongly objected to Peter Jackson’s direction for Éowyn, played by Miranda Otto. Professor J. R. R. Tolkien writes that she’s dead inside, in fact eager for death and to be immortalized in song, and numb to fear, except for concern that she and her House will be forgotten in the tides of time and history.]

We’re all stories in the end, after all.
And, we live on, as long as people remember and tell the stories.

What if Ophelia was Hamlet’s match in every way, in Shakespeare’s play?

What if Hamlet dissembles madness, exaggerating his melancholia, in order to throw his Father’s murderer off balance; and, to try and catch a killer?

And, Ophelia feigns her hysteria, for the same reason, to convey hidden truths, in her seemingly incoherent ramblings and rhymes?

But, it seems like both of them are overcome, because the world around them is mad.

Frankly, I think it’s Claudius who has been sexually abusing Ophelia, coming into her bedchamber, in the dark, as she describes; and, why she gives herself and him Rue [an herbal remedy to induce miscarriage].

To shut her up, I think he tries to hang her, from the tree, which Gertrude says was overhanging the stream, to make it appear that she did herself in.

But, she manages to fight him off, only to end up in the water, where her heavy clothes drag her under the water, drowning her.

It would be nice to think she is able to pull herself out, downstream.

But, this wouldn’t allow her brother, Laertes, to pull back her shroud, before her remains are interred; and, fight with Hamlet over her grave, both overcome by grief.

And, Laertes thinks Hamlet has been sleeping with her; and, that’s why he thinks she drowned herself.

Another good reason to learn to swim; I was training as a Life Guard, at the Y, before they added so much chlorine, I couldn’t breathe, which made it difficult.

The Captain said I was too small to be a Life Guard; so, he was always pitting me and the girl who was next shortest against each other, saying there was only room for one of us on the Squad. We thought it was funny.

Wow! There is some great stuff on here.

An android Ophelia? That’s new. Like Android Karenina.

Take Care of Each Other.

And, learn to swim- remember Ophelia!
