Paint Like Me by cameoanderson Paint Like Me by cameoanderson
This is my first attempt at a tutorial covering how I do my dog paintings. I had a hard time organizing it since I tend to kinda work sporadically on things in no real order. This picture, forcing myself to kidna have a method, didn't come out as well as I had hoped my example would!

Hi again...... Just a question...... If you would draw a cat, would you do almost the same like this then? Or do you have other tips thatīs special for cats??
I am just wondering because I am drawing a husky with this tutorial now. But I would love to draw a cat in a good way. And I have tried everything...... But your animals like I have said if just so amazing and I just canīt come up with something good when I am trying to draw a cat. It just doesnīt work. Thanks for answering and sorry for all the questions. I just want to learn how to draw animals because I like them so much. :)

Good to see your process in its entirety. :w00t:

I love your bit about rendering the muzzle all the way first. :XD: Some of my instructors have said that good portraiture (even a full body ones) means rendering the face first. But if like you're trying to design a creature or fantasy warrior (who isn't based on anyone), then some advocates say ignore the face until much later.

Art is so subjective. I wonder the same about art rules and writing rules - there are a lot of little things publishers impose on people seeking to get their work out there that I don't think necessarily make for better story/writing (particularly where they want you to begin and end the chapter with some dramatic line that makes you want to read more. In some cases, I think subtlety is better).

So, sooo many contradictory pieces of advice. Forever and ever. :faint:

I don't like dramatic stingers in chapters either (although it might be different with individual issues of a comic...?) :XD:

It came out awesome
minor overlaps can be overlooked cause it's nothing important ;)
You did a great job on this, I'm sure it took quite a lot of time and I'm very grateful to you for making this tutorial and sharing your knowledge :D

Ok.. if this is the second comment i made then sorry for spam but it didnt show up LOL.

Thank you so much for making this!! It answered so many questions i had about how you paint!! You are a huge inspiration to me! I love siberian huskies so its always so much fun to see your art!! I just have a question, do you shade, highlight, color/everything on the same layer? except for maybe the background? Really great tutorial/walkthrough!! :D :D <33

Hi! I'm so glad I can encourage other artists. There are so many artists whose work inspires me and only a small number of them will let you in on their secrets. I wanted to be sure I shared whatever I know/learned as I grew :)

I do one layer for each dog and seperate bg as you guessed. That way I can move a dog around if the client wants or make changes to one without affecting the other.
