When they asked his job, Howard told people that he rolled. In fact, he would continue, he rolled, he tumbled, he twisted, and eventually, he wrung. Then Howard would distract his conversation partner by talking about the local beetles, or wander off to "fix his bandage". For Howard rolled something other than himself, and he loathed knowing that. Acrobatics would require far more -- shall we say, flexibility -- than Howard currently possessed. No, Howard rolled, tumbled, twisted and wrung... bread. He dreamed of a different life, one where the tumbles were those of his limbs and torso; one where stars spangled his costume and adoring crowds gasped in wonder. He'd lived that life once, long ago.

Sprinkling cinnamon into the dough he was working, Howard would relive each moment, savouring them as though they were the finest cuisine. Spoonfuls of honey poured into the mixture would remind him of the fluid movements he had once been capable of. Exotic spices, used as flavour or for scent alone, would bring to mind his fellow performers; a troupe of unlikely folk from every corner of the universe. As he worked, Howard would often rub idly at the bandages on his arm, sliding them back into place without a second thought. Even those would evoke the scent of the ring, heady with sawdust and excitement.

A beetle flew past and Howard paid it little attention. They were everywhere he went these days and no amount of pesticide could eradicate them entirely. He wished, most fervently, that he'd given more thought to this three years ago. If only he'd remembered that dead bodies, no matter how carefully embalmed, were so damned stiff. If only he'd had more time to think, post death, before jumping into this half-life. In another life, he'd have chosen so differently.
Okay, so like, I didn't realise the prompt of the day had been posted yesterday, so I wrote the other piece. Then saw day one had a challenge. So he's day 1's real piece, meeting the challenge below. Don't read this description until AFTER you've finished reading the piece, or you'll spoil it. :p

Step ONE: Write about a character who is dead. (Howard. Check.)
Step TWO: Your story must also prominently feature a crocodile, cat, or other common objects/animals associated with Egyptian mythology. (Mummy. Check.)
Step THREE: And for some added spice include at least three of these ingredients.… (Cinnamon, Honey, spice, sawdust. Check, check, double check.)

Nice job on how you wrapped in (pun fully intended) the challenge elements, it flows really well! I also really like the voice of Howard. :}

This was a good read.  I was expecting him to be injured, but he's a mummy.  :D
Love the concept of afterlife you expressed - his regrets about not going "on."
