Deep night over the open fields of Bethlehem.
Black and gray shadows: the sheep's frozen tracks.
The flock slumbers huddled together -
Only rarely a low bark, otherwise silence on earth.
A peaceful breathing down there in the valley.
Silent watch by the warming fire.
Sheep herding: men’s hardy wages.
Dreaming, a tangle of loden and leather,
The shepherds sit at the feet of a gnarled cedar tree:
A lonely musing in the reddish glow.

Glorious tidings: The son's poverty was divine will.
Wrapped in diapers, a bundle on hay and straw,
Lies Christ the Lord - his birth makes so happy!
A heavenly praise over the meadows of Bethlehem.
Dawn after a restless night.
