Description
And here's more in the circle portrait series! Are you getting sick of these yet? I'll admit they're a little repetitive, especially since I only use so many poses, but come on...look at that hair!
No, seriously, look at the hair. Don't look at her face, whatever you do, because that's the face of a woman who can kill with a glance, and she doesn't look too happy right now! >.>
I don't know if she's actually a haughty or condescending person, but in the few pictures ~erin-hime has drawn of Aphrodite, she always looks kind of pissed off about something or other. And since she's the villain of Modern Day Cupid, more or less, it seems only fitting that she be given a suitable condescending expression. I think it comes off as very condescending, don't you?
I don't know why she's holdin a pearl in her hand, since pearls aren't any of her attributes. It was originally supposed to be a shell, since shells are one of her symbols, but...yeah, didn't draw her hand the right way so it turned into a pearl. It kind of fits to me, since some of her attributes are sort of marine-based (thanks to her being birthed from seafoam), and I associate pearls with water...but it's only semi-there, since pearls are more obviously associated with virginity (at least they were in older times), and that's the opposite of what Aphrodite stands for.
But it's pretty, I guess. She kind of looks like she's thinking of some vile and terrible way to use that pearl though. I shudder to think of what she'll do with it.
Terrible, yet utterly gorgeous, as she should be. >.> Hope you like it, ~erin-hime!

The thing I think is hilarious about this, and I know I've mentioned this before, but I think Aphrodite is only 'evil' in the Cupid and Psyche myth. All the other stories about her are basically that she's the goddess of love, and yeah, she cheats on her husband a lot, but most of the gods do. So to have her be a villain, and be like 'oh yeah, she's so evil' and all that is just funny. Not like Hera, who's pretty much the villain in every story she's in. >.>
But that aside, I think this captured how I view Aphrodite wonderfully. You can clearly tell that she's gorgeous, and probably is a great person...until you cross her, and then all shit breaks lose. And Heaven forbid if you mention you're name's Psyche around her. She's nice to everyone...except anyone who reminds her of that ~*~awful~*~ daughter-in-law of hers. Then again, I think most of her beauty comes from that hair of hers. I love the style of it when I draw it, but when you draw it...just wow, so pretty!
I'm not sure about the pearl, either, other than it's just something pretty and sometimes associated with love. (Unfortunately, my version of Aphrodite is the daughter of Zeus and Dione rather than birthed from seaform, but we do have that famous portrait of her, so I see her milking that up like woah.) The seashell would have been neat, but think the pearl represents Aphrodite/Venus more thanks to that same portrait and her coming out of a clam.
Not sure what to say about this, since we both know how pretty this turned out.
I love seeing you do my characters because I get to see them realistically drawn/colored, and that just makes it that much more awesome. (Not saying what I draw is bad, but seeing it in another style's always awesome, yes?) Add in the fact that someone like Aphrodite was born to be drawn in Mucha-style, and it's just a recipe for awesome. I love the way her hair turned out here. It's the perfect combination of straight and wavy, so it's not insane like Psyche's hair was. >.O
(Ha ha, yes, she'll find a vile and terrible thing to do with that pearly...to Psyche, only to Psyche.)
So yeah, this turned out so awesomely pretty, and I can't wait to see what else you pop out with this little series! (Don't sell yourself short there! They're easy and pretty to do, so you can pop out a bunch of them and feel like you're being productive. It's win/win all around!)
