Flowers on the forest floor

Some Swedish animals, nature, and a tomte (sort of a gnome--see below) for your enjoyment. Various products with this pic available here on DA, and on my redbubble store: www.redbubble.com/people/vikin…

I've decided that it was overcast when Mr. Tomte here (Swedish house spirit--though not behaving like one, since he is out in the forest and not on the farm) decided to go picking flowers, but as he was bending over, the sun decided to break through--alerting his faithful steed to the fact that Herr Räv (Mr Fox) is sneaking around nearby.

This was SUPPOSED to be a quick speedpaint to put together an exercise for my students on wildlife vocabulary (hence all the animals--was planning on crowding in a lot more), but after half an hour putting together the forest, I realized this was turning into more of a self-indulgent project. Wish I could call it a speedpaint, since the bear and the sunbeams (and other stuff) are not as polished as I'd like, but I think I've put a good bit over a couple of hours of work into this. Won't try polishing this one any more, I think, b/c I think I pushed the focal point(s) too far to the corners, and would like to just do another painting eventually. It's more polished/developed than some of my other land-scapy things though. I have always loved the way the sun breaks through the leaves in a forest, so I will try to come back to pictures like this pretty regularly. Loosely based the bear off a pic found here: www.body-pixel.com/2009/04/15/… And the forest floor flowers are inspired by Swedish vitsippor (which I believe grow like this--could be wrong, and haven't been to sweden in too many years).

Mr Fox is a character from Swedish folklore? That has made my day...

Well, I called him "Mr Fox" on a whim, but you do get some animal folklore involving foxes--fox and bear stories in Scandinavia, I believe, though I think there are also fox and wolf stories (kind of an Aesop's Fables feel). We don't actually see Tomte paired with animals in the legend tradition like this (since Tomte belongs to the legend tradition and the fox and bear stories belong to Folktales about animals--the difference being that legends are ostensibly true [think "I was abducted by aliens!" or the Kentucky Fried Rat story] and folktales are just stories), but these pictures are not meant to be accurate representations of folk belief--they're just fun contemporary romanticizations of "old school" folk narrative.

Oh darn. I thought that the background to ROSMT was more legendary than we originally thought...

I quite like the quality of the light pouring in through the trees.
