As a lot of people will be aware, 3D printing is becoming increasingly affordable. Along with it, we're seeing a rapid increase of 3D printed art forms around the deviantART community and we're sure to see that continue as it gets cheaper and cheaper. This is fantastic. We love it when new technology gives birth to more forms of art. But we also need to work out where it belongs in the community.

This is where you guys come in. We want to pick your brains. Let us know what you think about the following: 

  • Where should a 3D printing category live in the deviantART galleries? 
  • Is it an Artisan Craft? Do they belong in Digital Art/3D Art? Should they be in Designs and Interfaces? Or is there another gallery the category should live in?
  • Are you someone who creates 3D models for printing? How would you classify your work?


Whether you're someone who is skilled in creating models, someone who just loves looking at the stuff, or even someone who is hearing about it for the first time, chip in with your two cents!

I think it should definitely go in Artisan Crafts.  Designing for a 3D printer is completely different than digital design, although you do it digitally. You have to think about tolerances, materials, etc., which has more in common with crafting than it does with photoshop.
