Aperture Science Sentry Turret

Folded and design by me from 18" square silver/gray Nicolas Terry Tissue Foil

The idea for this model originally started a while back (probably around when Portal 2 came out) , and it just kind of stuck in the back of my mind. I had a bunch of details I wanted this model to have: open side panels in firing position, thin but stable legs, an oval shape for the body, and if possible, an eye. At the time, I simply didn't know how to go about designing such a model, and so it was pretty much on hiatus for a long time. After recently watching the Turret Anthem [link], I decided to revisit the design (having improved since the initial ideas) and try pulling all the above features from a box-pleat pattern. This design turned out to rely quite heavily on final shaping as many of the details tend to be quite finicky, but the results were pretty much what I hoped for. I suppose it's a bit late for all the Portal hype, but it's better late than never.

Paper selection was a bit tricky. Although the model requires crimping and collapsing through many layers, extremely thin paper was actually not quite ideal for the task. Key structural points such as the legs and the tab that locks the model together benefited from something strong, and so I finally decided on a large sheet of silver tissue foil for some degree of moldability, with the matte gray side out. Turns out it was just barely thin enough to be able squeeze out details.
