Chapter 1: Lord Espeil
It was the dead of night. Even from inside the immense palace, this was obvious. The unnatural silence that hung in the air, the loss of activity normally present at midday, and the way each footstep echoed down the hallway, made this fact all too clear. Three people marched along the red carpet in the dim light. Of the three, two were clad in purple armor, knights of some kind. They stood to either side of the third man, who appeared to be in his late thirties, dressed in a red robe with gold trim. Despite his young age, he had the beard of an old man, thick with only a tinge of brown left in it. His hair was the same.
