I haven't seen the Kinski version for a century, but now I will. One's taste for grand-guignol wanes later in life, but not for fine drama. Slightly apropos: We were driving back from Sausalito, sometime in the early 90's, on the Golden Gate Bridge, no less, when my Frau noticed him driving an artfully-painted VW van, and gave him a thumbs-up - which he returned.
