First Try at Glass Engraving by caffeinejunkie First Try at Glass Engraving by caffeinejunkie
Title pretty much sums it up...

I really like glass engravings and wanted to see if this is something I might like to do myself. So I bought an engraver and a glass and selected something that seemed to be a simple motive - 'Crazy Twilight' in black and white. I was about to learn a few things... :)

I taped the printout inside the glass so that I could just engrave along it. Seemed to be a good idea.

While the engraver works really nice it is loud. I mean, really loud. I started from the left side and quit after 5 minutes because I started to get a headache. Being a more quiet type of person I sold the engraver a few days later. The problem with this type of engraver is, that it punches a little needle against the surface very fast. This means that you have very precise control over the machine but the mechanism just produces so much noise - even when not on the surface...

Since I already had a rotary tool I then bought glass engraving tools for it and gave it a second try. The rotary tool is a lot more quiet - even when engraving the glass and I definitely can work with it. The downside is that you have to watch out for the forces caused by the friction of the tool against the glass and it is also more bumpy.
With both tools I realized that my 'simple' motive is quite challenging... sharp edges, tiny hair strands... not for beginners :D

In the end, this was a good experience. I actually looks similar to the original image and I did not make too many scratches to the surface.

The next time I will try to get the lines directly on the glass so that I can better see where to engrave and will choose an image that does not need many fine details.

The result might only qualify as a scrap but I want to keep this little experience as a whole in my gallery
