Nostalgia warning!
Been busy. Tired. midnight. Will add comment later.

Good morning!!
I spent some time working on another pic, but I felt I was forcing it too much and not getting the results I wanted. I felt unsatisfied, in a stall, blocked. So I thought I shoud give it a rest and started doodling other ideas.

This pic started as a silly idea that was taken too far. It was one of those games that fueled my fantasies for damsels in distress scenarios but with a more urban or modern setting. Poor Marian, that gut punch, oooofff!!! The brothers shoud have taught her some self defense. Those were the days where violence against women wasn´t as censored as it is now.
This game marked my childhood, I never owned the NES, but I remember going to my friend´s house just to play it for the whole afternoon.

We took turns to play double dragon 1. I remember there was a secret where you grab the bat, climb the fence to pass the chasm, make one bad guy appear, climb the fence back to despawn it, return an swing the bat where the bad guy appeared and it gave you tons of experience points, so from the first level you could get all the moveset. The back elbow was the shit. It could knock Abobos to the floor in one hit.

Then came Double Dragon II.....literally chills down my spine as I wrote that.
MORE OF EVERYTHING!!!! The spinning cyclone kick, the uppercut, the hair grab with the knee to the face, THE FUCKING FLYING KNEEEE!!!!!! you could feel the power of that knee because of the sound effect it made and because it sends your enemies flying like 10 meters when it landed!!! Awesome!!!! I loved hitting enemies as they came down a ladder and throw them to the abyss!!!! HaHaHa!!! The spinning cyclone kick was very difficult to perform for me, that and the flying knee were like a micro orgasm each time they landed.
We played with friendly damage on, so we had to be careful not to hit each other. It was like a coordinated dance, we helped each other to pass some difficult sections -the chasm jumps and the helicopter that sucked you through the door- when the bad guys ganged on one of us it was like "Ayudame!! me estan madreando!!!" (help me!! they´re beating the shit out of me!), we managed health and when one of us was low on health, the other went ahead to take out the bad guys.
One of the most memorable moments was when we got to the end of DDII and were fighting against the shadow boss. We never got together to the final boss (I always ran out of lives), but that day we did. It was a battle of fucking EPIC proportions, I had only one fucking square of life bar, I was about to fucking die, and then it happened...
a failed jumpkick that the boss dodged, the landing that was surely gonna be followed by the cunterattack  of the boss... and then ..
Screen flash...
Slow mo ...
We jumped, screamed, high fived, screamed and jumped some more for the next 5 minutes WE BEAT THE FUCKING SHIT OF THE SHADOW BOSS IN TWO PLAYER MODE!!!!

Those memories take me to a very special moment in my life, where everything was much simpler. Double Dragon is a part of that in me.

...And don´t get me started on the fantastic soundtrack, that even on 8 bit still kicks ass to this day.

A quick google search for "mario bros double dragon" yielded only one image that resembled my idea, so almost my original idea, but in my execution I wanted to take this idea as far  as I could go.
First problem: Mario´s height in relation to peach´s. Solution? Mario standing on a pipe!
Had to ditch the hats for a more 80´s punk look. The folded sleeves with the exposed arms were mandatory. I wanted some more of their respective colors, in their body, not just the shirt, and I solved with the colored armbands. The bandages on their knucles are a call back to their white gloves. Had to reveal a little more of Peach´s anatomy to capture the feel of the original art -I guess no one will complain about it ;)-
The helicopter in the box art was substituted by the boo, which I tried to keep in the same angle and perspective so it could be subconciously related.

The Mario brothers (Mario Mario and Luigi Mario) had to look like kickass protagonists, I even gave Luigi his signature "Death stare".
The lighting was interesting, since the source of light comes from below and it gave this warm feel to the whole pic. To solve this, the ideal solution was to use the lava  glowing through an iron grate floor, and I think it came out pretty good. To counterbalance that warm colour, I used the cold dark blue from the night sky to make a cool shade of blue on the top of the characters to give the impression of the moonlight shining on them.

the enemies were going to be the hammer brothers or a generic koopas and goombas, but that changed during the process since I needed a female enemy from the mario universe to occupy the place of the whip wielding girl on the cover of the game cartridge. There is a lack of significant female enemies on the Mario universe (no, birdo doesn´t count) and I didn´t wanted to use an obscure or unrecognized character. I wanted this to be inmediately recognizable by casual and hardcore mario fans. So I picked wendy from the koopalings and so the other enemies, ended up as koopalings. The choice of weapons was fun, first I thought of a vine and a piranha plant for the whip, but it didn´t make sense. Then it ocurred to me the chain chomp and it worked wonderfully. The mace with the spiny ball was complemented with the lakitu above throwing exactly those spiny balls. The mace from the frontal koopa (morton I think), was substituted by a magic rod, and just to add flare, I added the magical glowing shapes that the kamek magikoopa uses to attack mario.
The pirahna plant was eventually added. It was initially going to be ripping Princess Peach´s dress, but it woud have covered the boo flying behind her. So tha plant just sitts there menacingly.

The top right corner of the box art was occupied by the game title. Since I wasn´t going to put letters on my pic and there was already a flying enemy on the composition (the boo), I took some freedom adding the lakitu, the bullet bill and finally bowser into that big empty space.

the floor was made with a google image search for "lava", "metal grate" and combining those with "bowser castle" as a backgorund, modifying the perspective to fit with the composition and then adding some smoke, glow effect and dust and cinder effect.

I handled the lighting and shadowing of the pic as a whole to mantain an overall feel to the picture.
It is to date the most complex image I feel I have worked on because of the amount of details and coloring and characters involved, but it was lots of fun. I enjoyed every moment I worked on it.

I broke my artist block with this pic and it surpassed my expectations. I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed working on it.
What a trip through memory road.

I am shocked at how on-model you were able to get with everybody in the picture...with just about all of them non-standard body types...but then again all of your fan art is usually spot on.  *envy*

Awesome!   :D

I love parodies of movie/video game covers, and to do a parody of one of my favourite NES games (Catharsis-playthroughs of Double dragon II helped me through high school), that just adds to the excellence on display here.

I spent so much money on renting “Double dragon II” (3 guilders per day, a lot of weekends were spent playing it) that i would probably have been cheaper off buying the game (For 129 guilders, about $55 today) instead, but back then 129 guilders was a lot of money for me, when the NES became old news i bought the game second hand though...   :meow:

Love this poster. Has a great bit of action game/movie vibe to it, as it should, no doubt. Love the expressiveness all around the page!
