The Mourningsong Magpie by CabinetCuriosities The Mourningsong Magpie by CabinetCuriosities
My lovely magpie which survived being hit by an antelope skull. There was a lot to fix but I managed to cover the damage somehow.
It is difficult to take good pictures but I tried.

Original Text:
This special creature is a hybrid between a magpie,  rooster and a melanistic pheasant.
The base I used was a mounted magpie in a flying pose. It was in an aweful condition and therefore I decided to use it for a project.
I cut off the wings and tail and mounted it on a base - made from driftwood and norwegian stone.
The following weeks I gathered the pieces I still needed: new magpie wings, melanistic pheasant feathers and tons of rooster feathers.
My first step was adding shiny feathers of the melanistic pheasant to the throat and neck area of the magpie. Every single feather was glued to the piece with patience and enthusiasm. After that I added the wings, which was kind of difficult due to their weight and the overall bad condition of the mount.
For the tail I dissembled 4 rooster skins (I still have rooster fluff balls flying through my room and sticking to my clothes everywhere...).
I used feathers of every length and added them layer for layer until I added small spiky feathers for the transition between tail and body.
:)

That is stunning, those iridescent feathers and the white chest and wing tips!

Lovely mount! Animals and birds with black coloring are SO hard to photograph, aren't they? When I magnified the photo, however, it was easily to see this beautiful bird clearly.

That is amazing! What type of glue do you use to attach the feathers? I am always afraid that I will damage feathers by gluing them (I have beaded jewelry pieces I want to add feathers to).

There is something about taxidermy that I personally think is amazing and majestic bringing to life a tragic event and making it beautiful
