Sketchbook Tudors by Buuya Sketchbook Tudors by Buuya
Just some random sketchbook doodles, drawn from the Showtime series, The Tudors.
(clockwise from top left: Thomas Cromwell, Henry VIII, Mark Smeaton, Anne Boleyn, Thomas More>

I gotta admit, I really enjoy (ie: LOVE?!) this show. Yes, it's not exactly the, er, most historically accurate recounting of Henry VIII's story, but, er... sexification!

Sexified history (and there are copious amounts of under-the-corset action and gay-boy kissing) can make up for any, er, deviations from fact. Or fabricating people. Or reinventing traditionally 'rugged' (coughuglycough) folks as steamy and delicious young man-imals. Man, I want pie now.

I've been rewatching it on CBC.ca (free streaming video available to all you Canucks! also, CBC is great because it shows nipples at 9pm), and I gotta say, it's damn addictive. I enjoy anything with constant costume changes by default, but it's great when you're actually learning something. Welllll, even if it's sexed-up Fact who just downed half a bottle of tequila and forgets what it's supposed to be doing sometimes.

May I just add that James Frain's ears are hilariously fun to draw?

Oh, and Grant from Jurassic Park was in it, so I kept having subliminal thoughts about dinosaur attacks... WHICH WOULD HAVE BEEN AWESOME. Ahem.

So, what do you think about sexified history? Abhorrent nonsense, or tasty fluff that, if nothing else, gives people some idea about what happened (and hey, isn't some better than none? :XD: ^^; )

Incredibly accurate in a totally, not realistic way. Which i believe is much harder to achieve.(no rhyme or diss intended, i mean that to imply its animated) The likliness is just spot on, and Henry and Anne look excellent. Amazing Job

Haha, this is great! The sketches all resemble them very much, except for Anne, which I find peculiar for she has such a unique face. xD You'd think she'd be the easiest one to draw.

Anyways, awesome you shared this on dA. =P

Yes, Anne is tricky to draw  She has the best smirk, though. Love it.

Nice way to portray them, especially James Frain/Cromwell and Jeremy Northam/More. They even resemble the actors a bit ;p

Sexification makes everything better. :D

I fell in love with the show in 2007 when it first aired, despite the historical innaccuracies (I'm such a history nerd). :P But then, it's hard NOT to fall in love with anything that involves a half-naked JRM. Mmmmmmmm...

You know an even better show than the Tudors though? One word: Rome. And that's even MORE sexified. It maked the Tudors look tame. Though even without the sex it's a show worth worshipping.

I have really been wondering if I would like that show. I was talking to my mom about how I didn't like the BBC Merlin because I am so picky about how the King Arthur characters are portrayed and I feel they did it wrong and she said that she couldn't watch the Tudors because she's the same way about those historical figures... but I don't know. I'm done with Rome now so I need something new.

I prefer my history unsexified. But, ya know, I like things to be unsexy in the first place. There's too much sexy out there already. I want some contrast. :(

Also acceptable: history so sexified that it ceases to be history. And it's more..."inspired by history" than anything else.

And I fully support the idea of you drawing some Tudor-era dinosaurs, please. :D

a) as long as the history is at least somewhat accurate, messing with the facts a little to gain viewer interest is okay in my book...the way I see it, history is fascinating but lots of people see it as boring names and dates and not worth their time. If something is fluffed a little, then maybe some people who think history is lame will change their minds or at least get to accidentally learn a little. Which is a totally acceptable way to learn.
b) gorgeous work as always. You're so dang talented.
c) but the one in red pen -- the dress and jewelry minus a person but with an eye...that freaks me out a little.
d) incidentally, I haven't watched The Tudors (I think part of the first episode) even though I'm a history geek and especially a fan of that general time-period. I should probably do something about this oversight.

a) Yeah, good point! Get people interested with something dramatic, and some inspiration to learn may follow :D

b) aww, thank you

c) haha... good. I think.

d) It's a well-crafted show, in my opinion. Yes, I really love 16th C history as well, and if nothing else, you can readily enjoy the styles. If you know the way things actually happened, you can watch Tudors and simply enjoy it on whatever level you like. At least, that's what I think.

addendum to number (a), however...
I believe that there IS a line. For example (and I am about to mouth off about something I don't actually have concrete evidence on here) I have *heard* that the movie, The Other Boleyn Girl, took huge liberties (true from what I saw in the preview) and did not take much historical fact into account. There are, of course, a plethora of other examples, but that was the first one that struck me. Anyway, SOME romanticizing and fluffing, I'm okay with, but unless specific artistic license is being taken,(example: 300)then there should be at least some semblance of historical accuracy. I have no problem with making history more publicly consumable (throwing chamber pots into the street at a Ren Faire might just drive customers away a bit) but doing (and applying)some research is good.

I really do enjoy the Tudors because in reality things like that really DID happen behind closed doors and curtains, we're just not told about it. LOL When you really look back on those years, life WAS about status and sex. It happened, but some like to turn their cheek and play the ignorant role. It definitely was not as "beautified" as the Tudors makes it, but it did happen...heh...anywhos, great job. :highfive:

haha LOVE the fur coat and you drew (anne berlin???? only saw it once....only learnt it once) really well. Personally i don't give a shite about historical accuracy, it's television and as long as it entertains it does the job it's supposed to do. I remember when this was showing in england last year.. and all these snobby old people were complaining about it. People really shouldn't ask too many questions, specially about a historical drama (may i enphasise drama.)Historical accuracy is exactly what documentaries are for.

pretty much, right? Just have fun with it, and enjoy. Yes, 'drama' is the key word there. Tudors is an awesome soap opera in period costume
