Oroville, CA | Male | Mid-20’s | Travel & Adventure | Self-Taught | Photographing Since 1999

Hi, I’m Michael Buuck (yep, “uu” – pronounced \ˈbük\, like “Duke” with a “B”). My style is to evoke a story by capturing the essence of any scene – even the mundane has secrets to tell, if you know where to look.

I specialize in travel/adventure and real estate photography, while practicing daily with the weekly challenges of my Project365 – a year of photos that has grown into 650+ consecutive days of photography. No matter where my feet stand, I am always looking for a story to bring home to you.

Photographing since the age of 10, my aspiration is to wander the globe. Beginning with adventures on our 14 acre, foothill property to backpacking mountain peaks, the vastness of our planet fascinates me. I’ve been to over 5 countries, 15 states, and 50+ national parks/monuments and would be content spending the rest of my life visiting them again and again. A particularly memorable experience was backpacking up Kearsarge Pass. Unprepared for wet weather, we utilized trash bags to brave through hail and a reverberation of thunder trapped between the granite peaks. In the moment, the circumstances were far from pleasant, but ultimately, it became a memory that we revel in sharing. I’m excited for what new journeys life will bring, hoping that they include some untouched and extreme environments like the Atacama Desert and Salt Pans of Bolivia.

Thank you for taking time to view my portfolio, and please stay tuned for future expeditions.

-Michael Buuck, Owner/Photographer

Hi, Miya.  I appreciate the thought-out critique.

As you mention, this is a very common photographic subject.  Yet despite that, it still elicited wonderful childhood memories for you.  Thank you for sharing, as it really makes me glad to hear that my photo had that effect :)

Waking in Nature
It is such a shame that we don't have time to wait for the perfect moment :/ If only we knew the right timing, right?

The excitement is in the luck of the draw :)

Thank you for the critique :)

I do wish that there were more shadows to work with in the photo. Without them, it leaves the scene a bit flat.

You are right that the composition does not bring attention to any specific part of the photo. I do wonder what it would look like if I had taken the photo utilizing the "rule of thirds." I regret not taking more photos here. I don't have a single photo of the cliff with a clear focal point. Rather, I wanted to abandon the "rule of thirds" and took my photos with what I saw as a C shaped flow (starting from 1/4 up from the bottom right, curving around the left side of the cliff peak, following that arc along the cloud border to the top right section of the photo). With that flow, I felt it gave some animation the clouds. I could imagine the scene as being alive rather than stagnant. With that composition, I had to sacrifice a focal point. The cliff peak would make for a great focal point, but is now an obstacle instead.

For me, the flow conveyed a story, but I may be the only one who interprets the photo that way. I understand if people don't like the concept, but I made the choice to go with what I want :)

If I make it back there, I do want to get a photo emphasizing the cliff's perspective. I am glad you brought that up. I didn't have much time to take many photos when I was there, and it would've have been great to see different views. Especially if I got closer to the cliff. Maybe I would like it more than my bizarre C flow.

I appreciate the critique. It's refreshing to hear a different opinion. You got me thinking about what I did that day and what else I could've done with my surroundings. Until now, I hadn't given it a second thought.

Thank you :D
