EXTREME STREET PHOTOGRAPHY - VIII Are there places were street photography is impossible? Are there countries easier than others, or harder than others? How is it street shooting like in exotic places, or places you never visited, places that are completely different from what you are used to? I asked a few street photographers around the world to share with us their experiences. The Dubai Street scene, I suppose, is pretty much similar to other über modern cities around the world. Great light, tall buildings, people everywhere, nightlife, etc. This beautiful city most definitely has a lot to offer - but only if you can survive the sco

My Bio
Lukasz-rooftops-wide

My Name is Lukasz Palka. Born in Poland, raised in the US, and residing in Japan since 2008, I am an urban photographer interested in all aspects of the Tokyo Metropolis; its people, its infrastructure, and the endless stories that unfold in the city’s streets.

I photograph in multiple genres, street photography, urban landscape, urbex, and others. Though my work is varied, it is aimed at one goal: a personal portrait of a great city. From its rooftops to its underbelly, Tokyo has fascinated me since I first arrived a decade ago. I am often asked what is it about Japan or about Tokyo that I like most, but it’s impossible to narrow it down to a single aspect. The city breaths like a living organism, energy ebbs and flows within it, while humans and traffic pump through its arteries as though propelled by a beating heart. It’s impossible not to be intoxicated by this environment of light and concrete, stage to the dramas of life. The only way for me to comprehend and convey these notions is through photography.

My inspirations lie in the masters of photography; William Eggleston, Saul Leiter, Alex Webb and many others. I am also inspired by the science fiction genre in various media. Works such as Neuromancer, Blade Runner, Deus Ex, and Ghost in the Shell help form a visual narrative. Let me take you on a journey into the Tokyo Metropolis.

DEEP INTO THE NIGHT

DEEP INTO THE NIGHT

Recently, I had the chance to work with Samuel L. Streetlife on a video shooting around Ueno station one rainy evening in Tokyo. It was super fun to create this film with him and I'm quite happy with how it turned out! It gives a glimpse into the way I photograph and the places I frequent. Check it out! I've submitted this photo into the Cyberpunk 2077 photo contest and I would love it if you could vote for my entry. If you could spare 2 minutes to do so, I would really appreciate it! Thank you! Please vote here: https://www.cyberpunk.net/en/photo-contest/art/3220

Street Photography with Flash on Halloween

Street Photography with Flash on Halloween

Learn how to use your flash in the streets for the best results. I explain the difference between auto flash (TTL) and the slow-sync setting, with examples demonstrating how these settings affect the photos. I also talks about how he uses his flash on Halloween in the streets of Shibuya in a way that brings out the ambient colors of the scene while still illuminating the subjects.
