Gem did not feel an ounce of relief when he reached the end of the maze. The figure of the cypherus grem they had met at the entrance offered no comfort, only sparking a flame of anger in his chest. Had he been tricked? Was this just a big joke? He didn’t know what to do with himself, eyes searching wildly around the fog filled clearing for his companion, but no one was there.
When the tiny crystal was dropped into his hand, he wanted to throw it back into the creature’s face. “Where is he?” he snarled. He wasn’t afraid of this thing but his heart was beating fast. He wasn’t afraid of the cypherus, he was afraid of losing the little boy that he’d tracked for what felt like hours through that accursed maze. He was exhausted and sore and feeling sick to his stomach after so long not hearing his voice. “WHAT DID YOU DO?” he bellowed, but the cypherus did not seem to care how angry he was, instead dissolving into nothing and leaving Gem angry and confused, turning on the spot to look
Gem hated the look of the place from the second he saw it. He knew he should have known better than to come to this circus. Something felt funny about it from the very start and he had been cursing himself for not trusting his instincts the whole time. But Lee--the young boy he trailed wherever he went--had insisted, so here he was.
They had been separated almost as soon as they’d entered the maze, Gem shouting into the fog and wondering how the hell that happened. He always kept such a close eye on the kid, and now he was gone in this chilling hedge maze and Gem didn’t know what to do.
He thought he saw him, over and over he would catch sight of the boy turning a corner, but when he called out no one answered. It wasn’t like him to ignore Gem’s calls. What was wrong with this place?
He followed anyway, and was starting to feel more uncomfortable by the second. He was told things would be here to scare him, but nothing ever came. Nothing pursued him. Nothing crept out behind him. He
