Irene aftermath and Intervention

Journal Entry: Sun Sep 4, 2011, 8:22 AM

I HAVE POWER!!!!!!!!!

Though Irene came and went without too much damage in my area, just a few downed trees that thankfully didn't fall on anyone's house, it managed to cause enough damage to take the power down in my area. And it wasn't a big area either; it was only a small block of houses both to my right, left, and front. The houses in back of us, as well as the rest of the neighborhood, all had power. Which meant that we were very low on the priority list for the power company so I didn't have electricity for five whole days. FIVE WHOLE DAYS!

We finally got our power back on Friday, though we still had to get rid of all the food in our refrigerator and freezer (and those were packed). Since our hot water heater and stove are gas powered, we were able to have hot showers and cook some meals on the stovetops, and our camping trips prepared us for how to deal with no electricity as well. I was even able to get some work done at home, despite my cat craving attention twenty four seven. So all in all, though it was frustrating, it wasn't that bad. I still don't want to have to go through it again anytime soon, though, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that all tropical storms/hurricanes stay away from the Mid-Atlantic the rest of this season.

So now that I'm back and plugged in, i'll be answering notes/comments and stuff. :D

Also, if you're in the Maryland/Virginia/DC area, I'll be in the Artists Alley at Intervention in Rockville Septemer 16-18 along with a bunch of really cool artists including :iconmegamijadeheart:, :iconcorbie:, and :iconansuz:. If you're in the area, or were planning on attending, stop by! :D

Earthquakes, Thunderstorms, Hurricanes, Oh My!

Journal Entry: Thu Aug 25, 2011, 4:36 AM

Mother Nature seems to have it in for the East Coast this week. First, that earthquake in Virginia, which I felt up in Maryland, that everyone was ill prepared for. Thankfully, the earthquake wasn't a big one, or there would be much more property damage as us East Coasters aren't used to getting the earthquakes California gets all the time. Today, there will be massive thunderstorms bringing gallons of water on already saturated ground, which means more trees will be falling down. And then, there's Irene, scheduled to hit my area Sunday now. Even though I live about half an hour inland from the coast, Hubby and I are doing hurricane prep, which mostly means making sure we have water in case our power goes out for a couple of days. Our power company is pretty good, so I don't think we'll be out of power for long if we are, and thankfully we have a gas stove so we can have hot meals should the power go out.

So, to all my east coast watchers out there, be careful and take care of yourself!

I'm back! and interview with Faylen

Journal Entry: Sat Aug 13, 2011, 2:52 PM

I am back from my camping vacation! :D And what do I spend my day doing? Watching TV and going on the internets (I missed you, electricity!). I'll probably do a writeup of the vacation soonish, as I seriously need to practice my writing skillz; you all are more than welcome to read or ignore as you please. Briefly: I learned lots of new dances (European and belly), came home with a sunburned midriff, spent way too much money on books, and had a really really good time. And I started reading A Game of Thrones. Seriously, why didn't I start this series sooner? I might just become a fangirl.

And, since I've wanted to do this for ages, here's an interview with Faylen, taken from :iconsoniacarreras:

1). Hi! What's your name?

Aneth ara, I am Faylen Mahariel, from Keeper Marethari's clan.

2). Your age?

I was 22 when I was recruited to join the Grey wardens.

3). Favorite color?

Purple. I even insisted my vallaslin be in purple.

4). Fav food and drink?

The shemlen have something they call a tart, which I would kill for. As for drink, as long as it's alcoholic and not made by Oghren, I will drink it. Do not drink anything Oghren offers you. Ever.

5). Who's your crush?

My first crush was a very handsome hunter about my age when I was a teenager. Dark black hair, eyes like the rushing rivers; he was perfect. He chose another, though, and I was distraught for some time afterwards. But if he hadn't chosen someone else, I never would have met Alistair, and I wouldn't change that for anything in the world.

6). If you have a crush, did you kiss yet?

My first crush? Oh, we did much more than kiss, but don't tell Alistair. He gets jealous of these things.

7). Your hobbies?

I enjoy honing my skills with my swords, and listening to and telling good stories.

8). Who are your friends?

Here in Amaranthine, I am good friends with Nathaniel, Oghren, and Sigrun. Zevran also stops in from time to time, and I hear from Shale a lot as well. I was good friends with Morrigan and Leliana, but have since lost touch with both. And I had been good friends with Anders, but that is another tale for another day.

9). Favorite weather?

You'll think me crazy, but I love rainy days. Especially rainy days when I don't have to work.

10). Which season do you prefer?

Springtime, when the air is heady with the perfume of blossoming flowers.

11). Your biggest fears?

That Alistair will have his Calling before I do. He is my world, and I don't think I could be a Grey Warden without him.

12). Is there anyone you don't like?

Isolde. She let fear cloud her judgement and an entire village suffered for it.

13). Do you like cute things/persons?

I do! Especially griffons and dragons. Both are so cute, don't you think! It's a shame I have to kill the dragons though.

14). A compliment you get to hear often?

That I am beautiful. Mostly that comes from Alistair.

15). Weirdest persons you've ever met?

There was a hermit in the Brecillian Forest who was very strange. And Sandal. I know he means well, but I can't help feeling that there is something more about him. Something that perhaps even he doesn't know.

Tag tag, who should I tag? Um.. :iconphoenixfurybane: and anyone else who wants to!

Back From Otakon and BioWare Showcase

Journal Entry: Sun Jul 31, 2011, 4:08 PM

I'm BACK! Otakon was way awesome, but sooo tiring. I'm surprised my brain works right now (though that might be due to pizza and peanut-buttery-ice cream goodness). I made table but didn't cover con costs, since I had to pay for two badges and parking. BUT the big news is 90 % of my sales were from my webcomic books! That is a first for me, and since I'm trying to make my living doing my webcomic, is very good news indeed. :) This was also the first time I didn't step out of Artists' Alley at all; instead of going to see some anime or the dealers room, I stayed at my booth and sold or networked with other artists. I'm getting to know lots of people in the con circuit now which makes my AA experience that much better. :)

Also, I learned that BioWare is putting all their fanart showcase stuff on their facebook page for people to vote for fan favorite. For some reason, my Marian and Fenris piece isn't showing up, though both my comics are. they might have decided to cull the ranks further by having no more than two pieces by one artist up, but I kind of wish the painting made it into the mix as I was pretty proud of that. Still, i can't complain, can I? :) And if anyone can tell me how I'm supposed to vote on Facebook, that would be much appreciated. I keep looking and can't find the stupid 'like' button on any of the pieces.

Now, I go camping for two weeks, then go to Baltimore comic Con. Busy busy busy!

What I'm working on:
DA2 Hawke family Sketchcard set (60% complete)
Finishing Final Farewell (page 8, 0% complete)
comic for :iconsoniacarreras: (penciling pages)
comic for :iconabadir: (recieved script)
ME2 sketchcard set
Lots more comics! XD

Art Trades: Closed for now
Commissions: Currently, only taking sketchcard commissions. One sketchcard in full color (copic markers) is US$25 (includes shipping and handling). Note me if you are interested.

Journal Entry: Sat Jul 23, 2011, 5:14 AM

One of my pieces was picked for the Bioware fanart showcase in SDCC! I was reading :iconladywinde: journal and she posted a link where someone in the Bioware forums had kindly posted all 18 panels of art, and I got to page four and went like this:

o.o
O.o
o.O
O.O !!!!!

Holy crap, I wasn't even expecting to get picked. I'm not even sure how I'm feeling right now except honored and really really happy.

Here's the link link There's a lot of amazing work there. :)

Con Schedule

Journal Entry: Mon Jul 11, 2011, 4:47 AM

EDIT: My table at Otakon will be N 07 (found here Hopefully there will be a little bit of traffic. :)

I just got back from seeing my grandparents this weekend (yea!) and now I've got to prep for the next convention. I'm going to be extremely busy these next few weeks so I probably won't be posting/commenting much until late August.

First con is Otakon! I'll be in Artists Alley sharing with the lovely and talented :iconmegamijadeheart: and another friend who I don't think is on DeviantArt. Another friend, :iconnilaffle: will also be there (go check her stuff out, she's awesome!) hopefully near me. :) This might be my last Otakon since it's starting to get cost-prohibitive ($150 for a table and that does NOT include admission) so unless I make oodles of money, I probably won't be back. I'll be dressed as Yuna Saturday, and hopefully have some sort of nice outfit on Sunday. If you're going, come stop by! If not, wish me luck! :D

Second con is Baltimore Comic-con. I'll be sharing with :iconansuz: (who is adept at making pretty things) and Chezhnian of the webcomic Tamuran. I have to say, I'm a bit intimidated about this one, especially since Stan Lee is the guest of honor  I've never been at this Artist Alley before, so wish me lots of luck! :D And of course, if you can make it, please stop by.

Busy busy busy!

"Be on of the first 20 people commenting on this journal entry, and I will add you to the Featured List!

For each of the 20 first people answering this journal I will put his/her avatar and the three deviations I like most from his/her gallery on the list.

IMPORTANT: If you answer, you'll have to do the same in your journal, putting me on the first place, completing the list with 19 other people. The idea of this is not to get a free feature, it is to spread art around for everyone. I will check whether or not you have done this. "

Shianni placed a slender hand on her hip, and gave me a playful frown. "Don't provoke me, Zetheria. I have news!"
She then ran towards my bed, jumped up and down, and squealed. I knew I wouldn't like this. "You and the boys' fiancés have come early! The wedding has been rescheduled for today!"
I groaned, and swung my legs out of my blanket. "Oh, sod. Just because they're here early doesn't mean we have to just stop our lives for them and sodding marry them today. The deal was that me and the boys would lose our freedom three weeks from now!"
Shianni shook her head. "That's not a good attitude to have towards your future husband, cousin."
"Sod him. I don't even know him."
"Well, you'll get to know him, cause you two are stuck with each other until one of you dies."

In the midst of tears and fire was a scowl that challenged those of the monsters that invaded the cities, hiding the boy's beautiful features; he gripped the hilts of his swords, marching toward the battlefield with an aura of vengeance and defiance radiating around his form. Beyond the trail lay a possible ending he had never wanted, one he was once even afraid of, yet at that moment he held the demeanor of an angered warrior who'd gone rogue, eyes devoid of emotion, teeth bared and digging into the plush skin of his lips.
He exhaled softly, the summer heat simmering beyond his flesh, to his inner being. In the corner of his eye stood the other remains of the Grey, the man and woman who'd been with him since the beginning. They walked just as briskly as he, though there was no malic

Oh my, a contest

Journal Entry: Mon Jun 27, 2011, 6:33 AM

Sooo... BioWare's doing a fanart contest and wants people to submit pieces. I'd love to but I took a look at my gallery and all I have are comics, not real pieces of art. Well, the sketchcard stuff, but does that really count? So I'm thinking of trying to either finish one of my WIPs or submit something new, if I submit at all. I'm not all that confident with my painting skills, to be honest, so I'm not really sure I'll be able to come up with something decent in time.

I'm on the fence here. Should I submit anything?

Ah, why do you have to make these contests when I'm super busy?

Final Fantasy 12

Journal Entry: Tue Jun 14, 2011, 5:22 AM

It's been a while since I wrote a journal entry, so I figured I'd write another one. XD journal spam! XD

I started playing Final Fantasy 12 when it first came out, but stopped 5 years ago because life exploded and I had no time to game. I recently decided to try and finish the game, and was tempted to go back and replay the entire thing when I saw that my last save was at 95 hours. Rather than replay 95 hours, I just continued where I left off, despite the fact that I totally forgot what I was supposed to be doing and why. XD I've found some let's play on Youtube to help me fill in the gaps, and have been 'watching' them as I work to remember the story.

As I'm playing now, I remember just why I love all the Final Fantasy games. SquareEnix is not afraid of color. Pure, beautiful, gorgeous color. As much as I love DragonAge, it's usually very earth-toned and I just don't get the same satisfaction staring at the backgrounds as I do with FF12. Part of it might have to do with the amount of detail they put into the game, but it's also very vibrant. Heck, even the sewer system is bursting with color! It might be unrealistic, but if I'm going to spend 100+ hours playing a game, it better be a feast for the eyes. ;)

That also reminds me. I read a review of Portal 2 and how at 10 hours of gameplay, it was quite reasonable. I am very used to JRPGs, where the average playing time is at least 80-90 hours so 10 hours to me would seem very short! DragonAge 2 even seemed short to me at 40 hours. Origins I think took me about 80 so it felt right.

Anyway, I'm close to the endgame for FF12 (Bahamut, here I come!) so I'm currently just grinding to level everybody up to 50 before tackling all those Bosses. Because I know that fight's going to take me at least 4 hours. I know it. Then, maybe I can finally play Revenant Wings, which I also bought when it came out but haven't touched. XD

As for DA work.. I'm still working on Final Farewell, but life's getting a bit complicated at the moment (nothing serious, just busy) so it might be a while. I kind of feel bad for doing one page a month, but work comes first, and sometimes after comicing for 8 hours a day, I don't feel like doing any more. Not that I'm complaining, but that's why I tend to be pretty slow.

What I'm working on:
DA2 Hawke family Sketchcard set (60% complete)
Finishing Final Farewell (page 8, 0% complete)
comic for :iconsoniacarreras: (Received script, working on storyboards)
comic for :iconabadir: (awaiting script)

Return from Balticon

Journal Entry: Tue May 31, 2011, 5:33 AM

I'm baaaack!

Okay, so you might not have actually noticed me gone, but hey. ;) I had a wonderful time at Balticon this weekend, and even managed to sell some books! Friday and Saturday were the best days, as there were lots of people around, I was selling, and I had some panels to speak at. Plus, I broke out my Yuna Songstress outfit (which I will show you guys pictures of once I get a good one) and got lots of compliments and photo ops. :D Sunday, I sold maybe two things, and Monday I didn't even bother setting up my table. I did have a lot of fun meeting new artists and hanging out with them, plus hanging out with old friends. :D

One thing I did notice was that I tend to think of myself as an artist rather than a business person. I want to share my art/stories with people, and while money is good, it isn't the sole reason why I do it. Money does help me do it without having another job though. ;) I met a couple of people who's views are much different than mine. They want to make customers part with their money and try to figure out ways to do that; the product, while important, is almost secondary. Sometimes I think I ought to think more like a business person since I'm not all that good at actually making money, but I learned never to make product just for profit. I did learn some marketing techniques that I'll try to put to use over the next year, so that was helpful!

All in all, it was a successful con, and I'll probably do it again next year. Next up: Otakon!

Journal Entry: Wed May 25, 2011, 4:43 AM

Thank you thank you thank you to everyone who wished me a happy birthday! :D Ya'll know how to make a girl feel special! :D Unfortunately, I had to work yesterday, so I didn't really do much, but a friend of mine made me cardamom cupcakes which were very very tasty, and my husband took me out to get cheesecake and coffee, so I sufficiently killed my diet. XD Back to salads today! :D

Anyway, thank you again! You all made my day! Big hugs to everybody!

Mass Effect 2: Mission Accomplished!

Journal Entry: Mon May 16, 2011, 7:12 AM

Warning: There will be spoilers for ME 2. You have been warned.

Thursday night I finally, finally finished ME2 with my very first F!Shepard. They seem to have taken quite a bit of inspiration from ME2 for DA2; I couldn't help comparing the similarities while playing.

Side note: Liara seems to be the only asari with eyebrows, since she's a love interest. It makes no sense since she's supposed to be a pureblood, unless she decided to get eyebrow tattoos for the heck of it. Just like in DA2 where very few of the elves had eyebrows, with the exception of Merrill and Fenris, the LIs.  If there's another asari with eyebrows in ME1, then I stand corrected, but in ME2, no asari had eyebrows.

First off, I do like that comic that they included with the Playstation version of the game. Since, thanks to that exclusive Microsoft contract, I can't play ME1, I can at least make a few key decisions for Shepard rather than staying with the default options, though I'm sure a lot of the subtleties of those decisions were lost on me. For example, I get the chance to kill or save Wrex, and though it was an easy kill/save decision for me, I've heard that in the actual gameplay it's much more complicated. Plus, I had no idea who Shepard would romance, considering I barely knew Kaidan or Liara by the time I had to make the romance decision. So, Shepard remained single in the first game, which probably wouldn't have happened had I actually played it.

As for the actual gameplay, I had no idea it was set up in 3 acts until I went to the wiki. Each mission just felt like a mission, and I knew going into the Omega 4 Relay meant I wouldn't be coming back out, so I made sure to finish up every single mission possible until that point. I also love Bioware for making the casual gameplay option as I probably would have died many more times had I played on normal. :D I also loved that not all the loyalty missions were "here, go kill stuff". There was plot! There was drama! There was character bonding! It was a nice break from all the shooting, at least for me.

I also really really enjoyed that third act, and the fact that you had to make decisions on which crew member would do what based on your knowledge of them, just like a real military commander would do. I don't think I've ever been so worried that people wouldn't make it out of missions before then; usually I knew that if they were my companions, they would survive. I was also very proud that I knew my crew so well, we all made it out alive. :D

Speaking of the crew, I have to say, just like every other BioWare game, there really wasn't anyone on the team that I absolutely hated. I didn't care for Zaeed (he stayed behind unless I HAD to take him), but I really liked everyone else. I also was surprised at Miranda at the end. I thought if it came down to choosing between Cerberus and Shepard, she would choose Cerberus seeing as how they tried very hard to secure her loyalty. When she told off the Elusive Man, I cheered. :D My favorites ended up being Mordin, Tali, Garrus, Kasumi, Jack, and Grunt, and I tended to use some combination of these when going out on missions, with Thane or Samara thrown in for fun. Shepard is certainly not a xenophobe.

My first F!Shep romanced Garrus, mostly because he was just so darn cute and awkward. He was hard to resist, though Thane did try with his "siha' comment.  I wonder if he stopped having things to say because I romanced him. It seemed like everyone else had at least a few other things to say right before the Omega Relay, but Garrus was just stuck on that "Are we still on for tonight?" loop, which my poor husband grew tired of after a while. XD

I'm looking forward to seeing what happens in ME3, though it looks like I'm going to have to wait a bit longer as the release date has been pushed back. Ah well, at least I don't have to worry about spoilers anymore! :D

Pimping

Journal Entry: Thu May 12, 2011, 5:03 AM

I'm usually horrible at marketing, so I'm trying to get better at it by doing a little announcing every so often. :)

This month, a friend of mine who writes the webcomic Cybergen 2027 asked for some art while she gets the comic ready for a change in format. I love the characters, so I submitted a piece which is proudly on display starting today. :D If you like cyberpunk and futuristic stories, you'll like Cybergen 2027, and the archives are worth the read. Chapter 2's art is done by the aweseomely talented :iconnilaffle: who does really great work. And, if you like my stuff, you might like my webcomic, LaSalle's Legacy which is a fantasy adventure comic on the high seas. :) There, mission accomplished. :D

In gaming news, I finally, FINALLY got that IFF feed and am now helping Legion. :la: Those husks are friggin' hard to fight, especially when you're an infiltrator Shep who likes taking enemies down from afar. Anybody have battle strategies for those guys in case I have to fight them again? And no spoilers please if you're replying to this. :D I'm still helping Legion and like being surprised.

It's that time of year

Journal Entry: Thu Apr 28, 2011, 5:22 AM

Wow, it's almost May already? Time sure flies fast! The weather here has gotten really hot lately; I'm hoping it cools off since my husband refuses to put the air conditioning on before May.

Speaking of May, it's usually my busiest month of the year. I've got two dance performances on weekends and Balticon coming up, so that severely limits my fanart time. Which means that I'm going to be even slower at producing this month (I know, could I possibly be any more slow? :XD:). Hopefully after Balticon, I'll have more free time to do fanart and comics.

Speaking of Balticon, if you happen to be going, I will be heading a panel on making a graphic novel webcomic, along with :iconcorbie:, which I think is scheduled for Friday evening. Please come! The more people in the seats, the more likely they are to invite me back to do more panels. :) If you aren't going, wish me luck! I'm a bit nervous about it, as I get kind of nervous speaking publicly, but I'm hoping it will be good. :)

Current projects:

Runner up Kiriban for :iconblueberry-me: (I haven't forgotten! ;))
comic for :iconabadir: (awaiting script)
comic for :iconsoniacarreras: (awaiting script)
DA2 sketchcard set
