State of the DeviantArt Site

Journal Entry: Wed Apr 8, 2015, 5:20 AM

Hi everyone!

I've been sort of off and on here at DA, mostly working very hard on my webcomic, LaSalle's Legacy, so I haven't had too much time to really do Dragon Age fanart. Or, I could if I didn't want to play Inquisition all the time. Play game, or fanart.... such a hard decision.

Anyway, I'll be on here even less in the coming months since I'm having a baby. ::D: I'm due April 17, which means I could have the baby just about any day now, and I'll have even less time on my hands for fanarting and other things. So things will be extremely sporadic as I adjust to new life and figure out what I'm doing. :XD: LaSalle's Legacy will continue on until the first week of May, finishing out Chapter 19, and will then be on hiatus until probably 2016. More details will be posted on the site itself.

I'll probably pop on every so often to see stuff and comment, but there probably won't be any new art for a long while. I do post sketches and things on my Instagram and Tumblr sites occasionally, so if you're curious about process work, check those out.

Anyway, thanks to everyone watching and who comment on my work! I appreciate every single one of you, even if I don't respond right away. Wish me luck and I wish the best for all of you guys for the rest of the year too!

Thank you to everyone who sent me birthday wishes a couple of weeks ago. You all made me so happy! :D I wish I could hug you all in person, but virtual internet hugs will have to do.

Disney Enterprise

Journal Entry: Mon Apr 7, 2014, 5:11 AM

During our walk on Sunday, Mr Bukittyan and I began discussing which Disney Princesses would we choose to make up the crew of the Enterprise. Since I love hearing what other people think, I'll post a mini-poll! Which Disney princess do you think would be best suited for the following positions on the Enterprise?

Captain
First Officer
Science Officer (if separate from First Officer, they can be together)
Navigation
Communication
Tactical
Medical
Engineering

My roster would be:
Captain- Jasmine
First Officer- Tiana
Science Officer- Ariel
Navigation- Pocahontas
Communication- Snow White
Tactical- Mulan
Medical- Rapunzel
Engineering- Belle

If you agree, or disagree, let me know!

So I've started a Patreon campaign for my webcomic, LaSalle's Legacy, because I'm a joiner. :XD: If you enjoy my work and would like to support me, please take a look! I pay for my webcomic out of my own pocket (and occasionally my savings account) so any help is greatly appreciated.

Also if you're thinking about contributing and would like me to provide other content in the campaign, let me know. I'm never really sure what you guys would like so I just guess. Feedback is always appreciated. :)

If you can't contribute financially, spreading the word about the comic also helps!

Thanks to everyone who's supported me so far. :D

I'm a little late on the bandwagon, but I hope all of you have a wonderful year this year! 2013 had a lot of downs for me, so I'm hoping that 2014 is going to be better. Mostly I went to a lot of funerals, which was not fun. I'm hoping that I can hear about fewer deaths this year, but since my step-aunt just died from lung cancer on the second, things are not looking up. It wasn't a surprise, but still.

On the bright side, I'm going to be working hard both on my art and my writing as well as work on my webcomic. I've also pledged to try and finish up any fanart things I've been leaving on the backburner so hopefully this means Final Farewell will FINALLY be finished.

I also started playing Knights of the Old Republic for the first time. I'm still getting used to the controls, but it really is fun being in the Star Wars Universe and shooting all the things with my blasters. It's probably better on the Xbox than the computer, as occasionally the controls feel a bit awkward, but at least I can play it now. :D

SPX time

Journal Entry: Tue Sep 10, 2013, 5:31 AM

This weekend I'll be at Small Press Expo! It's the largest indie comic convention in the DC area and the amount of talent going to be there is staggering! Reina Telegemeier, Spike, Tara Tallon, and that's just a few of them! I'm kind of humbled to be in the presence of so many talented artists. And nervous too. D:

I'll be at booth number B12 with :iconansuz: and :iconChezhnian: of Tamuran with Books 1, 2 and 3 of LaSalle's Legacy. And there will be a SpiderForest booth at W22 there as well, with more of the best webcomics the web has to offer. Precocious has his own booth at A8, and Adrastus has her own booth at C5.

It's Con season!

Journal Entry: Mon Jul 15, 2013, 6:54 AM

Or, it's the beginning of Chaos for me. :XD: Next month I have Otakon and Intervention, and after that SPX (and possibly Nekocon, but haven't heard back from them, so I don't know.) I will have all sorts of LaSalle's Legacy merchandise, including Book 3, fresh from the printer, and will be available for at con commissions.

Otakon, Baltimore Convention Center, August 9-11

I'll be in the artists Alley at Otakon for the first time in three years! :la: I'm at table W06, sharing with :iconmegamijadeheart:, inbetween :iconsenshistock: and :iconansuz:; one of the best places to be. Here's a handy dandy map to find me in the massive AA.

Intervention, Hilton Rockville, August 23-25

I will also be in the AA at Intervention con in Rockville. I'm not sure where my table will be; I'm assuming I'll be at the same spot as the last couple of years. If you've gone and plan on going again, I'll be there! :D

Small Press Expo (SPX), Bethesda North Marriott Hotel and Conference center, September 14-15

Thanks to Intervention being early this year, I am also exhibiting at SPX for the first time. If you've never been, it's a wonderful convention to find all the best indie comics, both print and web. I've always been super inspired every time I've gone, and the amount of talent in that place is amazing. Many of my friend in the Spiderforest Collective will also be there with wares to sell; if you haven't checked out Spiderforest, do so. It's a lot of really good webcomics all in one place. I'll update with table information as I get it.

If you'll be at any of these cons, please stop by! I love chatting about anime/gaming/geekdom in general (though no spoilers for Attack on Titan please) and would love to meet all of you in person. If you can't come, then wish me luck! :D

I need your votes! (revised)

Journal Entry: Mon Mar 4, 2013, 5:42 AM

So, I've entered an art contest for my friends who write Snow by Night. The winners will be decided by votes, and since there's a lot of entries, I'm going to need a lot of help.

If you could spare a moment to vote for me once every day this week, I will be eternally grateful! :D

Vote here The picture is under my name, Jennifer Zyren Smith (you've probably seen the art piece up sometime last week).

Of course, voting for my comic on Top Webcomics would also be nice too. :D

Holy ninjastars, Batman, LaSalle's Legacy is also in ComicMix' March Madness. O.o;;;;;;! March is going to be bukittyan-begs-for-votes month it seems. Please vote for LaSalles Legacy. :D It would mean a lot to me. link

Fanfiction and random rambling

Journal Entry: Fri Mar 1, 2013, 7:26 AM

So you all know I draw fanarts and fancomics (alongside my original comics and art), so you might not be too surprised to know I write fanfiction as well. :XD: I've mostly been keeping a lot of that on fanfiction.net, where I was a member long before I joined DeviantArt, but I'm going to be cross-posting newer stories here as well, mostly because I can't figure out the formatting over at fanfiction.net and it bothers me when I can't have stories visually presented the way I want them to be. Even though I do comics for games, I tend to write fanfiction for manga/anime series so there won't be much for games. Currently, I'm obsessed with Bleach, so expect a lot for that series until I stop being obsessed. :XD:

I also might make a separate DeviantArt name for LaSalle's Legacy and cross post stuff there with here, just to keep things seperate. But I'm still toying with that idea.

Honestly, I really wish there were more hours in the day so I could write/draw more of my original stuff and write/draw all my fan stuff too. :D

oh, and if you're interested in previous fanfiction works, here's the link. I think it's mostly Sailor Moon, Gundam Wing, and Houshin Engi with one big Quest for Glory novella. A lot of it's really old too, so I probably won't repost any of it here.

Katsucon!

Journal Entry: Mon Feb 11, 2013, 1:36 PM

It's that time of year again. I'll be in Katsucon's Artist Alley at table J-23, which is located right across from the Art Show.

I'll have LaSalle's Legacy books and merchandise and will be taking copic marker commissions. I'll also be dressed as Korra from Legend of Korra one day, and Bethany from Dragon Age 2 another. If you're going to be there, stop by and say 'hi'! :D

Gonna be Livestreaming!

Journal Entry: Mon Feb 4, 2013, 5:42 AM

I think I've worked out the kinks in my Livestream efforts, so this Saturday afternoon I will attempt to livestream doing arts. I'll probably be working on a page from my webcomic, LaSalle's Legacy (around the middle of the chapter), so expect that. I don't think I'll be on for more than a couple of hours, but we'll see. If I feel like doing more, then we'll do more. Maybe I'll play around with Manga Studio 5 or something too.

Date and time: February 9, 2013, 2 PM US Eastern Standard Time.

I'll provide the link when I start.

HOpe to see some of you there. If you can't be there, then wish me luck! :D

AUSA This weekend

Journal Entry: Wed Nov 7, 2012, 1:23 PM

Quick journal entry...

I'll be in the Artists Alley at Anime USA this weekend, sharing a table with :iconphoenixfurybane:. I have no idea where we'll be, but I plan on being there Friday, Saturday and Sunday with the usual assortment of LaSalle's Legacy books and merchandise.

If you're in the area, or at the con, stop by and say 'hi'! :D

I probably won't be in the Alley at Katsucon next year, so this may be a good opportunity to come visit.

Surgery Update (edited with doctor diagnosis)

Journal Entry: Mon Oct 1, 2012, 4:43 AM

I had my minor surgery last week and everything went just fine. No complications, and I should get the stitches on my neck removed tomorrow. I spent my recovery time playing video games, petting my cat, and catching up on my Naruto manga reading. Now, I'm ready to go back to work.

Thanks for all the well wishes! :D Hugs to you all! :hugs:

Edit (10/4)

Went to the doctor Tuesday to get my stitches removed and discovered I had Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease. Which really isn't a disease. Description via Wikipedia: Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease (KFD) is a rare, self-limiting disorder that typically affects the cervical lymph nodes. Recognition of this condition is crucial, especially because it can easily be mistaken for tuberculosis, lymphoma, or even adenocarcinoma. Awareness of this disorder will help prevent misdiagnosis and inappropriate treatment.[1]

Kikuchi's disease is a very rare disease and mainly seen in Japan. Isolated cases are reported in America, Europe and Asia. It is mainly a disease of young adults (mean age, 20–30 years), with a slight bias towards females. The cause of this disease is not known although infectious and autoimmune etiologies have been proposed. Course of the disease is generally benign and self-limiting. Lymphadenopathy most often resolves over several weeks to six months. Recurrence rate is about 3%. Mortality is extremely rare and usually due to hepatic, respiratory, or cardiac failure.

Basically, one of my lymph nodes died and they just needed to remove it. It was funny that my doc looked at me and asked if either of my parents were Japanese because it seems to be very common in Japan. I have some Chinese ancestry, so that might have been it.

Anyway, there was my diagnosis, for those interested. I just find it amusing that I get a rare condition. :XD: Thanks again for the well wishes and hugs! :D Y'all are great.

Intervention Convention

Journal Entry: Tue Sep 18, 2012, 5:18 AM

I'm going to be at Intervention this weekend. I'll be at booth number 45 in the Vendor Room next to :iconbrittanymichel: and :iconmegamijadeheart: and near :iconansuz:. It's always a fun little convention and because it's not huge, you'll have ample time to really talk with a lot of your favorite webcomic artists.

Also, here's my panel schedule:

Friday, 3pm
Large Panels Room (Regency)
Telling the Microserialized Story
Along with Rob Balder, :iconcorbie:, and Pete Abrams

Sunday, 10am
Panels Room 1 (Jackson)
Elevator Pitch: How To Talk About What You Do
Along with Scott King

I'll be breaking out my DA2 Bethany cosplay outfit on Saturday and be dressed rather mundanely the rest of the convention. Drop by and say 'hi' if you're going to be there!

Speaking of Dragon Age, I've just heard that DA3 will be called 'Inquisition'. While I seem to be one of the few who actually enjoyed DA2, I'm not sure I'm enthused about DA3, particularly if we're going to be doing something similar to the Spanish Inquisition. Though I suppose events in Asunder and DA2 were pointing to it. Depending on how life is, I'll probably still play it though. :XD: According to the editor they have been listening to fan feedback so I'm hoping that since now they're taking their time with it, it'll be much better implemented than DA2.

Some bad news

Journal Entry: Fri Sep 7, 2012, 8:27 AM

I know I've been a little absent from my DA account, mostly due to being busy with my webcomic and goofing off on Tumblr. Hopefully I'll have more fancomics/fanart/original art to show you shortly.

That wasn't the bad news though. Last month I noticed a lump on the underside of my throat. When I went to the doctor, they told me I had strep throat and gave me antibiotics. The antibiotics took care of the strep but not the lump. I went to a specialist who then gave me stronger antibiotics, and when those didn't do anything, I went in for a CAT scan. Thankfully, all that was found was a benign lump, but the doctor wants to take it out, so I'm going to be having some minor surgery in the next couple of weeks. I've been told it's nothing serious, that I shouldn't even need to be in the hospital overnight, but it's still surgery. :P

I haven't scheduled the surgery yet, but it should be taking place within the month. I'll keep you guys informed. Hopefully, it'll all be over with shortly and I can get on with my normal life soon. :)

Vacation time

Journal Entry: Mon Jul 30, 2012, 10:20 AM

Not that I'm terribly active here anyway, but I'm going on my yearly camping trip Wednesday and won't be back in civilization until August 10. Updates to my webcomic will go as scheduled, but I won't be tweeting or tumbling anything for a week. In the meantime, I will be having fun and missing indoor plumbing.
