I love the number of old factories in Philly. I was always curious to know if any of them were still use for their original purpose

Nothing in this shot is, I am afraid. The building on the right was an envelope factory. Currently it is empty. The gold-colored building in the far background used to be the headquarters of the Reading Railroad. Now it is filled with redundant server arrays. The center foreground building used to be the city morgue. (Look up David Lynch in Philadelphia for stories of when he lived across the street, right where I was standing, when the morgue was still open.) It is now owned by a Catholic School. The building on the far left used to be a storage facility of the Packard Motor Company. Obviously it is now owned by U-HAUL.

That's a pretty good cross-section of the fates of our old factories. Some nearby are offices and condos are, too. I can think of only one single building I know, a textile company, that is still producing original products.

I swear this is not a Batman joke:

"Wayne Mills Co. Inc, a subsidiary of Wayne Industries, is a family owned and operated textile mill in our fifth generation. We have been weaving twill tape, binding, and light webbing at our Philadelphia factory since 1910.

"We manufacture a wide variety of woven narrow fabrics. Our dye facility custom dyes our product as well as offering contract dying to our customers. We laminate reflective material and extrude adhesives, both heat activated and pressure sensitive, up to six inches wide onto our products or yours.

"Wayne Mills Company currently employs over 60 people, many for over 25 years. This long term commitment by dedicated and well trained employees enables us to provide quality products and services to our customers."

Oh, and the tower poking up over the morgue was the headquarters of the Philadelphia Inquirer and Daily News continuously from 1925 until about three months ago, when they moved their offices to a smaller space. Currently a developer wants to transform it into an enormous casino hotel entertainment center.
