Using Reference

1 min read
In my recent interview with @ggMattB, we mentioned how important it is to use reference when drawing, and how artists should be encouraged to do it! Here's an example of the reference I used from @AdorkaStock for my drawing of Sylvie I did last year. Using reference helped me get the angle and the anatomy to my liking, and overall made me happier with the results. I originally did rough sketches of pose ideas I had in mind, but I would not have been able to get the perfect sense of motion without looking to models for help. It's a handy tool that artists should be encouraged to use. Check out my full interview with Matt here!

Hey everyone! I'm Brianna, a self-employed illustrator and comic artist. I'm honored to kick off DeviantArt's new Focus spotlight, where I get to create a custom piece commissioned by deviantArt! I'm going to pulling inspiration from other artists in this community, and I'd love to get your vote on how I create this piece. Be sure to check out the poll I made to choose the medium in which I create! When coming up with an idea I started thinking about what I love, everything from character design to fantasy themes, and my favorite animals in the world, manatees! I would love to use my original character Orabelle, a carefree mermaid who loves spending time with her manatee friends. Excited to get this rolling, so here's a look at my 'mood board' for ideas. The main character - Orabelle is my mermaid OC. A luxurious character, she covers herself with pearls, shells, and plants she finds when she ventures out into the ocean. Since she's a curvaceous girl, referencing actual plus size

Hi Brianna.

Just to let you know that I made a whole gargoyle clan collage and included your Katana design, I changed the eye shape and some colours but the rest is basically the same as yours. You can check it on my profile, I uploaded it a few days ago.

I thought it came from the official comics, but now that I know it is yours I would like to ask for your permission.

In case you don't, I will delete the uploads.

Thank you for your time and best regards.
