Prelude: The Flames of Redemption



Under the right circumstances, the elements on Earth can take on many purposes. Water can be used to sustain life, but a violent maelstrom or whirlpool can just as easily take it away. Earth can be used to grow our food and support ourselves, but in the form of an earthquake these things can be endangered. Even the air that’s used to keep us alive every day could one day be turned against us as a violent tornado. 

But among the elements, one of the most dangerous is fire. Just as quickly as it can provide heat and warmth, so too can it cause destruction and harm. And these two warriors reflect that nature perfectly. In their pasts, they brought about nothing but flames and destruction, but over time they would use these powers for noble purposes, and even turned against the man that set them on these paths.

And Roy Mustang, the Flame Alchemist!

Born as the son of Prince Ozai and Princess Ursa, Zuko’s life was difficult from the very start. Upon birth, his father was immediately disgusted by Zuko’s presence, just because his son didn’t have the “spark” in his eyes that other Firebenders had. Ozai hated him so much that when he considered the idea Zuko’s might not even be a bender at all, he considered throwing the newborn over the palace walls. The only reason he didn’t go through with this plan was because Ursa and subordinates, the Fire Sages, pointed out that maybe he was jumping the gun with this whole “I’m going to throw this newborn to certain death” plan. As it turned out, forgoing the idea of baby murder was a pretty good idea since Zuko later proved his father wrong by using Firebending at a young age.

Despite this, there still existed a growing unease in the royal family for the next few years. Upon the birth of their daughter, Azula, Ozai began showing favoritism toward her due to her skill in Firebending and worked to mold her into the ruthless tyrant he would be proud of. Meanwhile, Zuko would only find love and approval from Ursa, who consoled him during Azula’s growing rivalry and animosity toward him. The family’s situation really wasn’t helped when Zuko and Azula began arguing over teachings and techniques of Firebending during a family dinner. Ozai naturally took Azula’s side, and just ripped into Zuko, scolding him for his comparatively weaker training than Azula’s, revealed that he’d planned to discard Zuko upon birth, and openly told him that Azula was born lucky, while Zuko was just lucky to be born.

Naturally distraught by his father’s hatred toward him, Zuko began spending more time with other family members, like his mom and Ozai’s brother, Iroh. Unlike his father, Iroh was more than willing to treat Zuko like a member of the family, taking him to festivals and even occasionally acting more mischievously by helping him steal snacks from the kitchen.

Unfortunately, not all good things could last long, and Iroh was soon separated from Zuko to take part in a war against the Earth Kingdom. During this time, Iroh would lose his son during a siege on the capital of Ba Sing Se, causing him to abandon the military in grief. Upon receiving word of his brother’s actions, a disgusted Ozai approached their father, the Fire Lord Azulon. Zuko and Azula eavesdropped on the conversation from afar, and they learned that their father intended to take Iroh’s place as Azulon’s successor. Ozai reasoned that Iroh should no longer qualify as an heir because his grief and erratic behavior made it uncertain when he’d return from war, and the loss of his son meant Iroh would have no heirs to carry on his line. Enraged at the idea of betraying his firstborn son, Azulon staunchly refused, believing Iroh had suffered enough tragedies as is. As Zuko became frightened and ran off from his grandfather’s explosiveness, Azula stayed behind to learn the punishment Azulon would inflict upon Ozai. For dismissing the loss of Iroh’s firstborn son, Lu Ten, Ozai would have to kill Zuko to learn how it felt to lose his firstborn.

As Zuko slept, Azula eventually woke him up and taunted him for his impending fate, unaware their mother had overheard what Azula was saying. After taking Azula away and talking to her, Ursa would later wake Zuko up again, saying that she had done everything she needed to protect him, and instructed him not to forget who he was no matter how much things changed. When Zuko woke up that morning, he searched for his mom to ask what she had meant last night, but he couldn’t find her anywhere. As he searched for her, he learned from Azula that Azulon had died the previous night, and their mom had disappeared shortly after. Believing she was lying, Zuko continued to search the palace until he found his father in the gardens. When he asked Ozai if he knew where Ursa was, Ozai only hung his head in shame, confirming Zuko’s fears. At Azulon’s funeral, Ozai was named successor to the throne, supposedly at his father’s request.

With his mother gone, Zuko was now left solely in the care of Ozai, whose attitude didn’t change in the ten years they spent together. The only form of love he’d get would be from Iroh, who continued to raise and instruct the new prince, and this closeness would eventually lead Zuko to convince Iroh to let him attend a war council. Iroh agreed under the condition that Zuko not speak out during the meeting, but when one of the generals discussed a plan to sacrifice an entire army of troops for a diversion, Zuko spoke out and voiced his disapproval. Seeing this as a grave offense, Ozai instructed his son to participate in an Agni Kai as punishment. 

Despite agreeing to participate, upon arriving to the arena, Zuko learned that his opponent wasn’t the general he insulted, but Ozai himself. Unable to bring himself to fight his own dad, Zuko fell to his knees and asked his dad to forgive him for the outburst, but Ozai wasn’t feeling so merciful. Seeing his son’s refusal to fight as a sign of cowardice, Ozai instead chose to punish his son by burning the left half of his face. 

With the entire Fire Nation witnessing the prince’s humiliating defeat, Ozai would only add salt to Zuko’s wounds by stripping him of his birthright and exiling him from the Fire Nation. By Ozai’s decree, Zuko would only be allowed to return if he captured the Avatar, a master of the elements that had disappeared nearly a century ago.

Despite this mission being a fool’s errand, Zuko clung to it as the only chance he’d have to receive Ozai’s approval and regain his honor. He’d spend the next two years at sea, fruitlessly searching the ends of the Earth alongside Iroh and a small group of soldiers. But his persistence would pay off in time, as while traveling through the Southern Water Tribe, Zuko and the rest of the crew would find a long abandoned, shipwrecked cruiser from the Fire Nation light up, and noticed the Avatar fleeing to a nearby village.

Driven by his desire to restore his honor and capture Aang, Zuko’s time with Iroh would eventually heal his inner wounds, and as he traveled he began to see more of the world. Eventually witnessing the evils of the Fire Nation and his father, Zuko began working on a quest to redeem himself and joined Aang and his friends in their fight against Ozai. He even helped Aang master Firebending, giving the Avatar the training he needed to master all four elements and defeat the Ozai.

With Ozai defeated and disgraced, his role as Fire Lord would fall to Zuko, who began working to right the wrongs his dad had committed. Over time, he would succeed in his goals, becoming beloved by his subjects and bringing peace to the Fire Nation before passing the title onto his daughter, Izumi.

Hero of the Ishvalan Civil War, the Flame Alchemist, a determined leader, and seductive ladies’ man. These are the descriptions the people of Amestris would likely use if you asked them to describe Colonel Roy Mustang. Treated with distrust and disdain by many of his colleagues in the military, Mustang is seen by them as being many things. A selfish, pompous egomaniac that likes bossing others around. A narcissistic lady’s man who will steal your girl without a second thought. An opportunistic glory hound who will only work if it means he can gain glory and notoriety. But if you expect a man like this to have lived a life of relaxation and laziness, you’d be dead wrong.

After his parents died at a young age, Roy was adopted by his aunt Chris, who raised him with the intent of turning him into a gentleman. As he grew older, a teenage Roy would eventually learn that he had the ability to use alchemy, which allowed him to construct, reconstruct, and deconstruct matter. Eager to hone his craft, Roy convinced the elderly Flame Alchemist Berthold Hawkeye to begin training him. With these teachings, Roy hoped to become a symbol of strength and knowledge for the people of Amestris.

Unfortunately, the growing border wars between Amestris and the neighboring country of Ishval had caused situations to grow tense, and Roy was forced to divert his attention from his studies. Enrolling into the state’s military academy, the optimistic Mustang became ambitious, wanting to become a State Alchemist so he could protect citizens from getting caught in international affairs. During his time there, he would form a friendship with Maes Hughes, a military cadet who shared his dreams.

Upon turning 20, Mustang returned to Berthold, hoping to learn the secrets of his master’s Flame Alchemy and convince the old man to share his brilliance with the world by becoming a State Alchemist. To his dismay, Hawkeye refused the offer, and the eagerness he showed caused Berthold to begin doubting if Mustang was worthy of seeing his research. Unfortunately, they wouldn’t come to a conclusion, as Berthold would soon die of an illness while in Mustang’s arms. As his dying wish, Berthold allowed Mustang to inherit the secret research notes from his daughter, Riza. There were only two conditions the dying man left: that Mustang would look after her, and that he would never use these notes for ill purposes.

During Berthold’s funeral, Roy approached Riza, revealing his dream of strengthening the military and using his own strength to protect those under him. Riza in turn revealed that the notes her father left her had been tattooed on her back, and she allowed Mustang to look at them in the hopes that he could use its secrets to make the future happy for other people. After deciphering the code, Roy would obtain a mastery of Flame Alchemy and pass the State Alchemist’s certification exam, obtaining the moniker of “Flame Alchemist” and the rank of Colonel.

Three years later, the war with Ishval would reach a fever pitch, causing the country’s Führer, King Bradley, to order an extermination against the people of Ishval. The State Alchemists were sent in the front lines as human weapons, and chief among them was Roy Mustang. With his Flame Alchemy, he’d reduce the Dahlia district to columns of fire, earning him the nickname “Hero of Ishval.” During his service, he’d meet back up with Hughes and Hawkeye, who had enlisted in the military as a sniper after her father’s death. The three lamented that their once youthful optimism had been drained by the murders they’d been forced to commit, and they began questioning why the military was spending so much money and resources to kill the Ishvalans, who were technically also Amestrian citizens.

Eventually, by Mustang’s own hand, the war would come to an end, but the war had taken its toll on him. Where a youthful, idealistic man of the people had once stood, there was now a cynical, conflicted man who regretted the murders he’d committed and mourned the men he was unable to save. With the memories of his actions and the loss of his subordinates weighing heavily on him, Mustang’s mission changed. No longer would he work to protect the people, he’d work to rise above them and protect those beneath him, to make sure he would never lose another subordinate again. These people would in turn protect those under them, and so on until the entire nation would be united in protecting one another. And the only way he could do that would be by taking the place of the man that had authorized all this bloodshed: King Bradley.

With the war ended, Mustang was given the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and stationed at East City’s headquarters. While there, he would begin amassing a crew of loyal subordinates to aid in his mission of becoming Führer, including Hawkeye, who he assigned as his personal bodyguard and aid. The two would even come to an agreement that Hawkeye would protect him from harm, and in the event that Roy strayed off his path and used his alchemy for ill intent, she would shoot him in the back.

As he worked to continue his plans of becoming Führer, Roy would eventually be assigned to investigate and recruit potential candidates for the State Alchemist program. One of these searches would bring him and Hawkeye to Resembool in search of a young alchemist named Edward Elric. During his pursuit, he would learn that Ed was only 11 years old, and that the Elrics had performed human transmutation, one of the forbidden taboos of alchemy. 

Rushing to the neighbors’ house next door, he would also discover that Ed had recovered from the alchemical rebound at the cost of lost his right arm and left leg, in addition to sealing his brother Al’s soul in a suit of armor. Both of these feats were unheard of in the alchemical field, and seeing this as an opportunity, Mustang informed Ed of his reason for being in Amestris and offered to let him join the State Alchemy program. He even enticed him by bringing up how the program could let Ed and Al learn how to get their original bodies back.

One year later, Mustang- now promoted to Colonel- would find himself under the command of Ed, who had passed the exam with flying colors. In exchange for Ed’s loyalty, Mustang offered to keep his knowledge of Ed’s taboos a secret and gave him leeway to freely pursue his goals.

This quest for knowledge would eventually result in Hughes being killed by an unknown assailant, one that had involved in a group the military had already been investigated. Swearing that he would get to the bottom of it and avenge Hughes’ murder, Mustang would eventually aid in uncovering a centuries long conspiracy involving the Homunculus Father and his seven children. During this investigation, Mustang would kill Lust, learn Bradley’s true identity as Wrath, plan a coup to overthrow Bradley, and finally uncovered the truth identity of Hughes’ killer: the shapeshifting Homunculus Envy. 

After the final battle with Father, Mustang would work to change Amestris’ policies with Ishval, allowing its people to return to their country. He would later be promoted to Brigadier General two years later and begin working to establish trade routes between Amestris, Ishval, and the neighboring country of Xing. Over time, he would even succeed in his goal of becoming Führer, finally bringing about his dream of creating a united nation.

Flame Alchemy:
-A variant of alchemy created by Berthold Hawkeye
-By rubbing his fingers in the presence of a Flame Alchemy Transmutation Circle, Roy can create a spark that manipulates the concentration of oxygen in the air
-When creating the spark, a snapping sound is created from the speed of the highly concentrated gases and sparks reacting together and popping
-When attacking, he raises the density of the oxygen surrounding his target, turning it volatile and creating narrow pathways of oxygen that he can direct the flash fire through
    -This lets him incinerate any enemies in his surroundings while avoiding his allies
-Due to a difference in hand dexterity, Roy delegates each hand to a different effect, using the right for large explosions and the left for smaller, more accurate pinpoint flame attacks
   -When snapping both fingers at the same time, he can combine these effects to pinpoint his explosions
-Can control the intensity of his flames, giving him the ability to incinerate bodies or inflict non-lethal burns on minuscule areas

-After being forced to perform human transmutation and seeing the Truth, Mustang gained the ability to transmute without a circle
    -This also lets him use Flame Alchemy without needing his gloves or Transmutation Circles, though he isn't used to doing this and finds it uncomfortable


Weaknesses:
-Somewhat arrogant, stubborn, and prideful
-Prefers fighting at long range and has little experience fighting in close-quarters
-In order to use alchemy, he needs to understand the composition of the material he’s transmuting
    -If he doesn’t, the alchemy will rebound, deflecting the transmutation back to him and leaving him open to attack
-Flame Alchemy can’t be used on rainy days because the humidity prevents him from creating sparks
    -He can still use it in humid places, but only if the area is closed-off
-If his gloves are removed or its Transmutation Circles are destroyed, he won’t be able to use Flame Alchemy
    -Though he’s been through this enough times that he can think of loopholes to get around it, and it's no longer an issue after seeing the Truth
