Tinkering. A study. by BPauba Tinkering. A study. by BPauba
I would say these two took about the same amount of time to make. I actually do not know how long they took though! eh. Oh well. The top image is completely painted. It was primarily a piece that was inspired by *sumopiggy. Its a joy to go through his gallery . The bottom one was created through the motivation of wanting to be able to do quicker concepts without going through Terragen. I am guessing some of you have realized that the Terragen base is not actually mine, but `alyn's. You can find it as a stock resource on ~TerraStock.

And of course I cannot leave out the other stock in the image! Great thanks to everyone that contributes to sxc.hu. This is where I got the image.

Have a good one...

There's a great sense of translucency to the top one. The clouds look defined and gaseous. Nice work.

the second one is very nice, but i prefer the originality on the first.
that's so deep!
would be even more complete if there was a second layer of clouds. something like a huge mass of them in the background, with less contrast and stuff. but i like your concept. neat, unique. :D

Hey, thanks man. I am really trying to learn the steps to my developing technique. I really want to jump in and make a multilayered cloudscape but it is way to hard to right now because I am really at my infancy when it comes to these painting techniques. I gotta take it one step at a time and not get to overwhelmed! hah, but you will in the future see something crazy, I promise ;)

Sweet! I really like what you did with the stock on the bottom piece :highfive: I'm just starting to use terragen, I have to get better at matte painting! What other links or resources do you recommend for someone starting out?

Ah, thats a hard question. I would look into gnomon workshops DVD's if you have a nice cashflow. Dylan cole makes some awesome DVD walkthroughs, if you can get your hands on those you will learn sooo sooo much. Also just strolling through cgsociety (cgsociety.org) is a real insightful journey. There are alot of walthroughs and tutorials on that site that are VERY rewarding.

hehe, thanks!

since posting that comment, I've been doing exactly that for my Art Direction class. We pretty much watch Gnomon workshops all day (its a 9am - 3pm class!) and make concept art.

thanks!

I do have a color version, but I was not happy with them. some constructive criticism that I got a couple days back slapped some sense into me, so I did not submit that version!

aw man :( thats a real downer. they still look good though. i'm wondering how you got the brushes to look so smooth on the clouds, it looks amazingly rich in detail.

I am sure it being black and white will help the smoothness, but I used all default brushes. Mostly the chaulks and hard edged circles. Also the painting was 3000pcx wide ;).

ah, 3000px wide always helps :D
