It's some time since I took this picture, but I think I like it - mostly the simplicity of it. How do you think I could make it better? Do you like the clipping, the colors, the depth of field? What does it make you think of when you look at it?

Any critique is appreciated :)

First of all, the only "rating" (god, I hate the rating system) you should be concerned about is the technique one. "Vision" is too vague for me to rate it fairly and you knew you weren't going to get high marks for originality or impact with a macro flower shot.

Also be aware that I try and make a variety of ratings across critiques (as opposed to giving everyone 4 stars by default unless something's seriously wrong) so if these are lower ratings than you were expecting don't be upset. You can check out my other critiques to get an idea of what ratings I usually give if you like.

Now, on to your deviation itself. I actually think you could have done with more depth of field. You only have a slight edge of one petal in focus, which isn't exciting enough to hold our attention all by itself. DOF is not just determined by the aperture size, it is also dependant on focal length. With a smaller focal length you have shallower depth of field. In other words, with macro work, you need to use quite a narrow aperture to get the same depth of field. You've used f/2.8 which is very wide indeed.

I know you are trying to have a shallow depth of field to blur the background but my point is that with a closeup shot you already have quite a narrow DOF. For example, see [link] - an extremely shallow DOF at f/6.3! Granted, you're not as closeup as that (sticklers wouldn't define your picture as "true macro") but you can also see on [link] that they've used f/7.0 and still got a nice blurry and undistracting background. As long as you are close to your subject and there is a big gap between your subject and the background you should be all right. It helps if the background's quite plain too (the easiest plain one to find is the sky but often you can find a large mass of green too, as long as there aren't gaps in it).

On to the colours. They are nice indeed. I like the contrast of the white with the deep red, but I think I prefer the tones of the thing on the left (compared to the stark white on the right) because they have some red in them. Whether it's reflected from the roses or it has some red tones in it itself (it looks like another flower stem?), either way it softens the picture and balances it. The stark white is a bit too clinical by itself but these tones complement the flower and soften the picture in general.

I hope this critique has been helpful. This isn't a bad picture. It's a "nice" picture. I tried to give you some critique that will help you to make future pictures from "nice" into "beautiful", "stunning", "amazing", et cetera! Good luck!

i think u should focus more on the roses. how about the centre part of the rose? the roses kinda look more like tulip to me. (hope u don't mind)
like the contrast and blur background.

The white background gives this picture a crisp, fresh look and the bright red looks great against white! You mixed the foreground, middleground, and background to make a quite enchanting piece!

I really only have one thing to say about the photo and your concern towards it's depth of field.

I think it should have been larger to captured just a bit more of that rose in particular, maybe not even the whole thing, just a little more in focus would be great!

How do you think I could make it better?
I think you should put a black border around it! :O put it in merely more focus? :)

Do you like the clipping, the colors, the depth of field?
Very MUCH! ..... but maybe you should take the whole bunch of petals? just my opinion... :)

What does it make you think of when you look at it?
I thought about the title you gave to this one.... My brother's girlfriend gave him a rose on his 20th birthday... is it weird? :?

=D i love rose
ok as feedback:i think the focus point in this picture is the rose in the center so i think you can make the color abit more luminate than other because it make it stands out ; secondly, the piece of the rose is front can make people unconfortable too looke at it because it hides the main part of the picture, i think next time u can keep it but dont make it hide the focus object . So ya that my vision how the picture will looks better .

I like the fact that is simple, but its up to you how simple it is ; maybe there are lot of meaning in there , when i look at it , i think about the begining of a love story, because the flower just started to grow

I like the white background~ You should try different lighting with it to get different (and sometimes more dramatic) effects ^^

I also find the petal in the front a little distracting~

I also like the simplicity in this photo like you mentioned ^^

Good job~ Keep up the good work ^^

Beautiful picture hon! I really like the colors and the white background. What I think you could improve on is the sharpness of the photo. You're focused right on the main rose but it seems to be blurred somewhat as well. I think you need to distinguish between what you want the viewer to see right away and what they don't.

Overall though, it's beautiful.

i love the details on this, i really like how i can see the dark black parts on the flower and its very 'real'. however, the focus is bothering me a little, it feels like i'm not sure where im supposed to look. perhaps place the in the centre, or if you want it to the side, i think getting rid of the extra petal popping out at the bottom will give a better focus. right now its in the front and distracting the vision somewhat. if wanting to capture more than one flower, maybe capture more of the other flower too instead of just a petal. overall its a nice shot and pretty photo =)

Mostly this is a nice image. I guess the only annoying thing that stands out is the focus. It seems to be slightly off-centre to the actual hierarchy of the flower and I keep trying to look to the right a little more and having my eyes majorly confused because it's completely out of focus. You seem to have used the rule of thirds in the layout--which means that the image, or at least that standout feature of the image, is not in the centre. But it's confusing because that's where the focus is. Unless you're trying to mess with people's brains it's better to have more visual harmony.

This may not bug others as much as it did to me, so don't worry too much about it. Otherwise the contrast between background and foreground and the use of colours are very good. The overall image is lovely too look at. Good work!

I do love what detail in the petals I see in this! The shades of red here are gorgeous! I think in some areas of the picture is too blurry, which I don't believe is necessary for this. :) I think with how big the petals are I'd rather see the sharpness and detail.

I like the background and the simplicity of the piece as a whole. The smell of fresh cut flowers is one of the most difficult things to forget and the most simple to remember. I love the softness of the piece as a whole, but I think the focus should be more on the flower that is primarily in the photograph. Other than that, great capture!

Great picture! I really like how you combined foreground, middleground and background in this! :D The focus and framing is quite unusual and very intriguing.

My advice would be to add more shadows - this is a bit to bright, in my opinion. Darken the midtone, and maybe the shadow as well. I can see some really cool textures that are kind of hard to notice but with more shadow they would stand out more.

 Awesome shot.

Would you mind explaining the title?

I like the white background. It really helps bring out the red. In terms of composition, the petals near the bottom distract a little. But other than that, it looks very soft.
