Studio Ghibli is OVERRATED! by Boschian-Fantasies Studio Ghibli is OVERRATED! by Boschian-Fantasies
NOTE: Before you send me hate mail and death threats, let me make myself clear on this:

1. I don't hate all of Ghibli's works, in fact, some are my favorite anime films of all time.
2. I like Hayao Miyazaki, and I think he is very talented. Though I am not a fan of Isao Takahita. Don't much care for Takahita.
3. This is not a hate stamp, but a critique stamp.

As that being said, here are the reasons why I find Studio Ghibli overrated:

1. One word: Disney.
If Disney did not distribute these films, they would be nowhere near as popular in the West as they are now.

2. Some of the films have a bad habit of being preachy and didactic.
This could be an anime or mange things, but why do so many anime films and TV shows have to be super preachy about the moral of the story?
There are some moral lessons I agree with, but no sane person does not want to be preached at. In fact, didactic media usually have people doing the exact opposite of what the moral lesson teaches them. Sad but true.

3. Some (NOT ALL!) of the lead characters are dull and have very little to no personality.
True, there are some likable leads in Ghibli's works, but sadly, the secondary characters are usually more memorable and life like than the poster child of the movies.
No, I am not saying this because the leads are females. I'm saying this because I believe female characters should be much more than just "role model" blank slates for little girls to place themselves into.
If these were video games or CYOA books, I wouldn't have an issue for viewer inserts, but movies are usually not interactive media, and blank slates just fail in that department.

BTW, as great as Miyazaki's works are, he is not the only talented cartoonist or artist. There are many others, like Yoshitaka Amano, Leiji Matsumoto, Osamu Tezuka, Keita Amemiya and for a non-Japanese example, the works and films of Soyuzmultfilm studio of Russia.

Just had to get this out. Because to me, no matter how good or awesome the movie or media is, NOTHING IS CRITIC PROOF!

My favorite animation companies:

7.) Nickelodeon
6.) Dreamworks
5.) Pixar
4.) Cartoon Network Studios
3.) Madhouse
2.) Disney
1.) Soyuzmultfilm

Studio Ghibli is fine, but they always end up confusing me. Take Howl's moving castle as a great example.

Good to see another Soyuzmultfilm fan like myself.

Just wondering, have you heard of an animator named Don Bluth?
Most of his works are amazing.

I love their movies, but there's a whole world of animation out there.

Honestly I have to agree.  As much as I like some of their films they are seriously overhyped "almost as much as disney".  I always see people in real life bragging about how they have such great taste in animation just because they saw a Ghibli film or two and trash on people that like DBZ or other cartoons.  There are other great Japanese animators too and as you mentioned foreign animators in general.

Oh hahaha okay but damn, they make my eyes hurt.
For me, that's with me and shitty voice acting like 4kids dubbing animes because I laugh through their cheesy dialogues.
(Oh okay )

Hey, that's with me too. I'm still looking forward to European animation since some cartoons I liked came from there.:)

Oh okay, I do enjoy Ghibli though. But still, Miyazaki did make a good point about how awful the otaku/anime fanbase is.(Not all anime fans, basement dwelling psycho fanbrats is what he was referring to )

I so agree with point 1.

Disney somehow is immune to criticism even when all they release is bland, inoffensive fluff. It's frustrating reading movie reviews and while most movies get mixed to negative Disney gets getting rave reviews. I think the Mouse is bribing critics.

You aren't! :cuddle:
MANY film indiustries that would blow any animation appreciator's mind with their beautiful movies are thrown to oblivion by the most acclaimed companies...which is sure sad!
Ghibli has made many movies I personaly enjoy a lot, and love as classics, BUT, This said, there's a KAJILLION other film sudios which create animated WONDERS and re sadly ignored...

As much as I have great respect for Studio Ghibli, I will admit that the company is pretty overhyped.  Especially in regards to Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro, and Princess Mononoke.  And Princess Mononoke is one of my favorite animated films of all time!  Also, I'm impressed that you know many other foreign cartoonists.

Thank you.

Just because something is overrated, does not mean I hate it.
I just want to show that nothing in existence is critic proof, no matter how good the art media is.

The only Xbox One game that looks interesting is Killer Instinct, but I heard the DLC costs an arm and a leg.

Remember those Satellite TV commercials with cable guys being represented as barnyard pigs eating people's money and valuables?
I can so picture Nintendo or Sony making a similar commercial, with XBox people being represented as barnyard pigs going after the money of gamers.

I think Nintendo's hatedom is the worst.

I know, not everyone has to like Nintendo, and I respect that.

But man, some of the Nintendo hatedom is just rabid and psychotic. They need to chill their panties for once.
