Fandom Abuse: Horizon Zero Dawn by Boschian-Fantasies Fandom Abuse: Horizon Zero Dawn by Boschian-Fantasies
TBH, I never played this game before. I heard good things about Horizon, and it is a critically acclaimed PS4 game....
However, after accidentally running into the fandom while searching for video game walkthroughs, I don't even know if I want to play it anymore.

Yes, unlike with FFVI and Labyrinth fandoms, the fandom encounter was accidental and I was not a part of it.

I mean, Horizon has just come out this year, in 2017, and already, the fandom is raging out of control with their lulz.

Horizon fans bash people who dislike the game, assuming they hate it for having a female lead. If not only that, they bash Nier fans and claim Nier:Automata is a rip off of Horizon. Ummm....excuse me? Do they realize that Nier: Automata has a female protagonist too? And that most sane, level headed gamers don't give a damn about a character's gender or identity politics? They just want to play the game and enjoy it. Just let game be game and gamers be gamers.

Also, another thing, Nier and Drakengard came out before Horizon: Zero Dawn. So no, it's not a rip off.

Just wondering, should I play this game? Or is it not all that hyped up to be?

Still looking forward to Nier:Automata, since I love the first Nier so much.

-------

Fandom is nice. I have my fandoms too.
Sometimes there is just a show you like more than others for no objective reason. That's the mystery of art. That is perfect.

But what is bad is becoming so obsessed with an unique fandom that you forget anything else.
How many artists have lost their creativity thanks to fan art? How many viewers are missing great new shows before they watch a same episode 16 times?
And even worse, too much fandom is repulsive for other people, and in the end, you won't be able to share your passion for a show with one another because you'll scare him.
It can sadly go even further, as the incidents of violence over trivial conversations about fictional characters tend to get more and more frequent. And even though you are probably never been part of an incident like this, you should be aware that it is only the extreme of a global tendency of identifying and defining oneself almost exclusively through fandom.

Stop this phenomenon. Stop this "fandom abuse". Be reasonable and responsible fans. It'll be good both for you and your favorite show's reputation.

Unfortunately every fandom will have bad fans in their communities, all the way from kid shows to RPGs. I've already seen fans complain about people who dislike Horizon. I can understand how fans feel about others who have biased opinions on things and bash them, that is a little annoying I suppose? Though there's always the good side of fandoms I try to stick to.

I'd say the game is worth it, and I bought it rather blindly too. I saw the trailer for it shown at E3, read a brief article about it and that was it. Didn't look into it for over a year after that.
So I bought it the day it came without knowing the plot or anything else (only had an idea of the concept) and I immediately loved it.
It's immersive and very beautiful, open world RPG, some morality choices to pick from, interesting people and NPCs, and the world is just very lovely.

I know all fandoms and hatedoms have their up and downs, but you see more rabid fans and haters with popular media.
You ever noticed that? It's like popular things attract more psychos or something.

So it's a good game?

That sure does happen with more popular media.
I'm in a few fandoms (not so much anymore) that got insanely popular on certain sites, and again, unfortunately, those sites live and breath hatred for people with opinions different from their own.

Yes I'd say so. I put in a good amount of time in it already (perhaps 20-30 hours?) and I really, really enjoy it.

Might want to keep off that Horizon for a long while.  I've only watched someone playing Spyro, never been part of the fanbase and good thing a former fan warned me not to bother.

No, I've seen footage of it on one of the Retro Replay rant videos: www.youtube.com/watch?v=1P5bIN… . It looked pretty interesting, but personally, I enjoyed more with Child of Light and even Ori and the Blind Forest (I'm more of a watcher of playthroughs than a player myself).
