For fans of animation, I don't think it's necessary to be a fan of every genre in animation. I don't think it's fair to force someone who might be into the surreal and wacky kind to get them into the realistic and serious kind, or if they're into the family friendly kind and you try to force them to get into the adult and dark kind. People have their different tastes in animation and that's totally fine.
So apparently Gillette just put out a controversial ad talking about toxic masculinity that's attracting viewpoints from all different sides. Let me see what all the fuss is about.
Okay, let me just start this off by saying that I can understand where the criticisms are coming from. Although probably not intentional, there is a bit of an over-the-top tone to the first part this PSA, that can easily be interpreted as making men look bad. Especially in the one shot of the men at the grills saying 'boys will be boys', something I haven't really heard used to excuse bad behavior.
However, if you're gonna say this whole PSA is bad because of the first forty seconds, say "Boo! Gillette's giving into the feminazis* and the SJWs* by saying all men are evil!" instead of paying attention to the core message of being a decent person, then you've completely missed the point and/or are part of the problem.
Despite the over-the-top way this PSA gets it across, it is not saying "all men are sexual harassers", it is saying that men should hold other men accountable for their actions, be an example of what men should be. Just like women should never take the abuse and sexism of men, men should not let their fellow men be abusive and sexist. It's called getting to the root of the issue.
There's also the other major criticism of this ad. 'But women can be abusive and sexist too!' Yes, they can. I know that, and I'm sure Gillette knows that too. But we're focusing on men for right now, okay? Saying that 'anyone can harass' at a time like this, is like saying 'all lives matter' in response to Black Lives Matter. It distracts from the issue the conversation is supposed to be about. When a PSA comes out about female-on-male harassment and causes a big discussion on social media, then we'll talk about it.
Like it or not, the #MeToo movement has made a change in our society. It was the point where we as a society decided to stop turning a blind eye to sexual harassment, and give people the opportunity to speak up. And now, thanks to it, we see scumbags like Bill Cosby, Harvey Weinstein, John Kricfalusi, Kevin Spacey, Woody Allen, Roman Polanski, Louis CK and ToonCriticY2K, for the gross pieces of shit that they are, not for the facade they tried to put forth. The alternative to speaking up, is complacency. And complacency is how toxic masculinity and sexual harassment got so bad in the first place.
Bottom line, I'm standing with this ad. It has a great message that is desperately needed in times like this. And if you have a problem with that... well, then you're part of the problem.
* One the stupidest terms ever used to counter-argue against a movement
If you have an unpopular opinion about something, DO NOT write or say stuff like "you’re gonna hate me for this" or "I’m gonna lose some followers saying this", or anything else in that league, like depicting your fanbase attacking you or booing you for expressing your opinion. That only sends the implication that you have no respect for your fans, and think they’re a bunch of close-minded idiots. Anyone who does that kind of stuff to you, isn’t a real fan.
This is basically an extension of what Chuggaaconroy said on Twitter, but if there's some celebrity death one week into 2019, please don't instantly proclaim that "2019 is gonna suck now!" Yes, it's sad, but it's a stupid reason to hate on a year just because a celebrity happened to die in it. Yes, even 2016. And plus, the Internet has collectively decided to declare every year worse than the last, presumably until the end of the century, we don't need more negativity.
