What's with the "pseduo HDR"? Who made this up anyway? Digital cameras have higher dynamic ranges than film. The following relates to Nikon .NEF raw image format and getting all of it out.The original .NEF files are 12 or 14 bit. .NEF raw images cannot be viewed in their entirety in a single image unless what was recorded by the ccd or cmos are compiled and tone-mapped. The only way that is currently possible is with HDR software be it Adobe, Photomatix, et. al.
